Parents' Weekend

Information Table -- Friday 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Parents are invited to come by the Visitor Information Center, 149 Elm St., for additional copies of the Parents' Weekend schedule, campus maps, and other kinds of general information and assistance. Tickets for the Friday evening Whiffenpoof/Whim 'n Rhythm concert will be on sale there during the afternoon.

Parking -- Most university parking lots are open to the public on Friday after 4 p.m. and all day on Saturday and Sunday. On Friday during the day, visitors should use either commercial lots or metered spaces on the street.

Meals -- Dining halls in the residential colleges are open at meal times throughout the weekend (listed on the schedule), and visitors may either pay cash or write a check at the door.

Football tickets -- Tickets to Saturday's Yale-Dartmouth football game may be purchased on Friday 10 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Yale Athletics Ticket Office, Ray Tompkins House, 20 Tower Pkwy. Pre-purchased tickets may be picked up on Saturday at the Will Call Window at the Yale Bowl (outside Portal 16). For further information, call the Yale Athletics Ticket Office at 432-1400.

Campus Tours -- Meet at the Visitor Information Center for student-led tours of the campus (approximately 75 minutes long). Tours are scheduled for Friday at 10:30 a.m., noon, 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.; and for Saturday at 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Museum Hours -- Peabody Museum of Natural History, 170 Whitney Ave.: Monday-Saturday 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Sunday noon-5 p.m.; Yale Center for British Art, 1080 Chapel St.: Tuesday-Saturday 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Sunday noon­5 p.m.; Yale University Art Gallery, 1111 Chapel St.: Tuesday-Saturday 10 a.m.­5 p.m., Sunday, 1-6 p.m.

Friday, October 17

Lunch -- 11:30 a.m.-1:15 p.m. Lunch will be served in all 12 residential colleges.

Special Tours -- 1-1:45 p.m. "A Grace, a Place, and a Race: Highlights of the Permanent Collection": a docent-led tour of the Yale Center for British Art, 1080 Chapel St. Free admission.

2-2:45 p.m. A guided tour of the Peabody Museum of Natural History, 170 Whitney Ave. Free admission for parents and family members.

Faculty lectures -- 2-3 p.m. "A Truly Liberal Education For the Twenty-first Century," by D. Allan Bromley, Sterling Professor of the Sciences and dean of engineering. Rm. 119, William L. Harkness Hall (WLH), 100 Wall St.

3:15-4:15 p.m. "Three Hundred Years of Yale: The Evolution of an Institution," by Edith MacMullen, director of the Teacher Preparation Program and lecturer, department of history. Rm. 117, WLH.

3:15-4:15 p.m. "Gregorian Chant from the Cathedral of Chartres to the Sistine Chapel," by Craig Wright, professor of music history, department of music. Sudler Recital Hall in WLH.

Panel Discussion -- 4:45-6 p.m. "Yale College Life," moderated by Betty Trachtenberg, dean of student affairs. Panelists: John Loge, dean of Timothy Dwight College; Mary Li Hsu, assistant dean of Yale College and director of the Asian American Cultural Center; Sandra Goodson, associate director of Undergraduate Career Services; and Erin Ford-Dirks '98 Branford College, freshman counselor. There will be an opportunity for parents to ask questions. Sudler Recital Hall in in WLH.

Friday Night Forum -- 8:30 p.m. Featuring Aharon Barak, president, Supreme Court of Israel. Joseph Slifka Center for Jewish Life at Yale, 80 Wall St. Call 432-1134 for more information.

Dinner -- 5-7 p.m. Dinner will be served in all the residential colleges. Ezra Stiles dining hall will be open 4-7 p.m.

Films -- 7:30 & 10 p.m. "The Princess Bride," presented by the Yale Film Society. 35 mm, Surround Sound. Whitney Humanities Center, 53 Wall St. Admission: $3.

8:30-10:30 p.m. "A Freshman Year at Yale," by Calvin H. Leung. Coffin Room, Rosenfeld Hall, 111 Grove St. Admission: $3. (Also being screened Saturday and Sunday.)

Theater -- 8 p.m. "Buried Child," by Sam Shepard, winner of the 1979 Pulitzer Prize, presented by the Yale Dramatic Association. Yale Repertory Theatre, 1120 Chapel St. Admission: $5 students, $8 adults. Call (203) 432-1212. (Also performed on Saturday.)

Concerts -- 8 p.m. Yale Concert Band, Thomas C. Duffy, director. Shostakovich's "Folk Dances," Grainger's "Colonial Song," McTee's "Circuits," Suppé's "Light Cavalry Overture," Sparke's "Dance Movements." Woolsey Hall, corner of Grove and College streets. Free admission.

8 p.m. Parents' Weekend Jam, featuring the Whiffenpoofs and Whim 'n Rhythm, the two senior a capella singing groups. Battell Chapel, corner of College and Elm streets. Admission charged. Tickets will be available at the Information Table on Friday afternoon at the Visitor Information Center, 149 Elm St. Call 776-7800 for more information.

8 p.m. The Yale Russian Chorus, a tenor-bass a capella choral ensemble conducted by Mark Bailey, composer and expert in Orthodox liturgical music. The group performs 12th- to 20th-century sacred and folk music from Russia and Eastern Europe. Dwight Chapel, 67 High St. Tickets: $6 adults; $3 children and students.

Saturday, October 18

Continental Breakfast -- 7-10 a.m. Continental breakfast will be served in Calhoun and Ezra Stiles colleges only.

Refreshments Table -- 8:30-9:45 a.m. Complimentary coffee, tea, and pastry. Information about Parents' Weekend is available as well. Woolsey Hall, corner of Grove and College streets.

Panel Discussion -- 10-11:15 a.m. "Education in Yale College," co-moderated by Richard C. Levin, president of Yale University, and Richard H. Brodhead, dean of Yale College. Panelists : Donald Brown, the Philip R. Allen Professor and director of undergraduate studies in economics; Kelly Brownell, master of Silliman College and professor of psychology and of epidemiology and public health, and director of the Yale Center for Eating and Weight Disorders; Sarah Winter, assistant professor of English, and Margaret Riley, associate professor of biology. There will be an opportunity for parents to ask questions. Woolsey Hall.

Brunch -- 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Brunch will be served in all 12 residential colleges.

Special Tours -- 11:30 a.m. Museum Masterpiece Tour of the Yale University Art Gallery, conducted by a docent of the Gallery. 1111 Chapel St. Free admission.

Noon-1 p.m. Tour and demonstration of the Yale Memorial Carillon in Harkness Tower by members of the Yale University Guild of Carillonneurs. Meet at Branford Gate, High Street. Participants must be prepared to climb 170 stairs before reaching the carillon playing cabin.

Football Game -- 11 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Buses from Payne Whitney Gymnasium,
70 Tower Pkwy., to the Yale Bowl will leave every 10 to 15 minutes; the schedule will be posted at the gym. The Yale-Dartmouth game begins at 1 p.m.. Pre-purchased tickets may be picked up at the Will Call Window at the Yale Bowl (outside Portal 16).

Film -- 7:30 & 10 p.m. "William Shakespeare's 'Romeo and Juliet'" (1996) with Claire Danes and Leonardo DiCaprio, presented by the Yale Film Society. Whitney Humanities Center. Admission: $3.

1:30-3:30 p.m. & 8:30-10:30 p.m. "A Freshman Year at Yale," by Calvin H. Leung. Coffin Room, Rosenfeld Hall, 111 Grove St. Admission: $3. (The film will also be shown on Sunday, Oct. 19, 8-10 p.m.)

8 p.m. Parents' Weekend Gala Concert featuring the Yale Glee Club, Yale Symphony Orchestra and the Yale Concert Band. Woolsey Hall. Free admission. (A reception will follow the concert in Rm. 201, Hendrie Hall, 165 Elm St.)

8 p.m. Out of the Blue and Something Extra, two undergraduate a capella singing groups. Morse College dining hall, 302-304 York St. Tickets: $3 for current Yale student; $6 for eveyone else.

9 p.m. Baker's Dozen and Proof of the Pudding, two undergraduate a capella singing groups. Davenport College dining hall, 248 York St. Admission charged.

Sunday, October 19

Continental Breakfast -- 7-10 a.m. Continental breakfast will be served in Calhoun and Ezra Stiles colleges only.

Religious Services -- 10-11 a.m. A variety of religious services taking place throughout the weekend. See the Calendar of events.

Brunch -- 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Brunch will be served in all twelve residential colleges.

Open House Brunch -- 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Open House and brunch at the Joseph Slifka Center for Jewish Life at Yale, 80 Wall St. For the schedule of Shabbat services and special Sukkot events call 432-1134.

Parents Weekend officially ends at 1 p.m.
