Gallery's symposium to explore sexual anxiety in the work of artist Edvard Munch

A symposium examining sexual anxiety in the work of artist Edvard Munch (1863-1944) will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 26, at the Yale University Art Gallery. The event is being presented in conjunction with the exhibition "Munch and Women: Image and Myth," now on display at the gallery.

"Munch and Sexual Anxiety" will feature remarks by four individuals:

* Peter Gay, Sterling Professor Emeritus of History, who will discuss "The Invention of Sex." Professor Gay has written numerous award-winning books on European cultural history, including the multi-volume study "The Bourgeois Experience: Victoria to Freud."

* Art collector Sarah G. Epstein, who will speak on "Women in Munch's Art." Ms. Epstein has collected the artist's works since the 1960s. In fact, the Yale Art Gallery's exhibit on Munch has been selected from the Epstein Family Collection, the most extensive holdings of the artist's works outside Europe.

* Patricia G. Berman, professor of art history at Wellesley College, who will present a talk titled "Edvard Munch and the Decadent Body." Professor Berman is curator of the "Munch and Women" exhibit and author of the catalogue accompanying the display.

* Richard S. Field, curator of prints, drawings and photographs at the Yale Art Gallery, who will introduce the speakers and offer introductory remarks. Mr. Field organized the Munch exhibit at the University.

The symposium is free and open to the public. It will be held in the Yale Art Gallery lecture hall, entrance on High Street. A reception will follow.

The exhibition "Munch and Women: Image and Myth" will be on view through Nov. 30. Located at the corner of Chapel and York streets, the Yale University Art Gallery is open free of charge Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and Sunday, 1-6 p.m. For more information, call 432-0600.
