Principals honored for their work by School Development Program

Three New Haven public school principals are among the 13 school principals who received awards from the Yale Child Study Center for "changing the face of public school education in the United States."

The principals were given this year's Patrick Daly Memorial Award, which is named for the Brooklyn, New York school principal who lost his life while going to the aid of a child. The award is presented annually by the School Development Program, a nationally acclaimed school reform initiative of the Child Study Center developed by child psychiatrist Dr. James P. Comer. It is given to principals whose educational leadership "provides inspiration and an example to principals across the country." The New Haven principals receiving the Patrick Daly Memorial Award are Regina Lily-Warner of Co-op High School, Lola Nathan of the Davis Street Magnet School and Charles Williams of Career High School. The other recipients are: Debra Barham of Western High School in Greensboro, North Carolina; Marilee Blysma of the Samuel Gomper Elementary School in Detroit, Michigan; Katherine Corbett of the Ron Edmonds Junior High School in Brooklyn, New York; Joan Crisler of the Dixon Elementary School in Chicago, Illinois; Robert Golden of Mount Auburn Elementary School in Cleveland, Ohio; Fred Hernandez of The Foxfire School in Yonkers, New York; Mary Manti of P.S. 15 - Patrick Daly School in Brooklyn, New York; Donna Morrison of McLeansville Middle School in Greensboro, North Carolina; Ann Van Sickle of the Euclid Elementary School in San Diego, California; and Lloyd Wimberley Jr. of Myers Park School in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The principals work at schools that have implemented the School Development Program, which is now used at more than 700 schools across the country.
