Film, Music & Radio

Film

Films -- both old and new, American and foreign -- are offered throughout the school year at campus sites. Two student-run film societies -- the Yale Medical School Film Society and the Yale Film Society -- offer memberships which allow movie-goers free admission to film screenings throughout the semester after paying a membership fee. Films presented by these societies are generally offered Thursday-Sunday. Check the Calendar section of the Yale Bulletin & Calendar for weekly film listings.

Films are also offered throughout the year by the Yale Center for British Art and the Yale University Art Gallery. Special film series are also sponsored by individual departments, residential colleges and programs. These are also listed on the Calendar pages of the Yale Bulletin & Calendar.

Music

Hundreds of concerts are presented each year by the School of Music, Institute of Sacred Music, undergraduate organizations and University galleries. There are groups and activities to meet a range of musical interests for performers or listeners. Some are open to faculty and staff as well as students.

The Chamber Music Society at Yale, Philharmonia Orchestra of Yale, Great Organ Music at Yale, Duke Ellington Fellowship, Faculty Artist Series, New Music New Haven, Yale Camerata, Yale Band, Yale Symphony Orchestra and Yale Glee Club all present concerts in Woolsey Hall and Morse Recital Hall in Sprague Memorial Hall on a regular basis. Each year, Yale Opera mounts a production at the Shubert Theater.

For information on auditions and performances, check bulletin boards, the Yale Daily News and the Yale Bulletin & Calendar, or contact the particular organization. Following is a list of some of the musical groups and their phone numbers: Bands, 432-4111; Yale Symphony Orchestra, 432-4140; Glee Club and Freshman Chorus, 432-4136; and the Marquand Chapel Choir and Yale Camerata, 432-5180.

The School of Music Concert Office produces a monthly calendar which is available for a small subscription fee (call 432-4158) and runs a free concert information line for its performances at 432-4157. A free season brochure may be obtained by calling 432-4158.

Radio

The Yale Broadcasting Company, Inc., is 94.3 WYBC FM and 1340 AM. A commercial, not-for-profit broadcasting outlet, the Yale Broadcasting Co. operates a 3000 watt, Class A, FM station as well as a 1000 watt, Class 2b, AM station.

The primary mission of the company is to foster better communications between the Yale and New Haven communities while serving as a training tool for individuals interested in radio.

Resources at WYBC include a professional staff, which in conjunction with student managers, provides the organization with continuity and ensures station operations. The professional/student management teams also supervise the membership, which is composed of Yale students and individuals in the wider community.

Yale Broadcasting's facilities include a digital production studio, a new digital FM studio and a newly built AM studio. In these, students and community members have the opportunity to learn about radio as both an educational and commercial enterprise.

Both stations reach over 50,000 listeners every week, with WYBC consistently ranking among the top three radio stations in the New Haven market. An agreement with General Broadcasting of Connecticut
(99.1 WPLR) provides the Yale Broadcasting Co. with a sales team from which operating revenues are generated. For more information about the Yale Broadcasting Co., visit its studios at Hendrie Hall,
165 Elm St., or its website at www.wybc.
com. Information is also available by calling its main office at 432-4118.
