Student Health Services
The University provides students with a comprehensive prepaid health care program called the Yale Health Plan (YHP). YHP is a 25,000-member health-care organization which provides health care exclusively to the Yale University community. YHP is located at the University Health Services Center (UHSC), 17 Hillhouse Ave.
Yale degree candidates are eligible to receive services at no charge in the following UHSC departments: student medicine, graduate medicine, athletic medicine, gynecology, inpatient care facility, internal medicine, mental hygiene, nutrition, urgent care and laboratory (on-site testing).
Most clinic hours are 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Urgent care service is available 24 hours a day. Students are urged to keep the following telephone numbers for handy reference.

The University requires all students to have adequate hospitalization and specialty care coverage. Students are automatically enrolled in the Yale Health Plan Hospitalization/Specialty Care Plan and billed through their Student Financial and Administrative Services (SFAS) accounts each term.
The YHP Hospitalization/Specialty Care Plan may be waived upon presentation of proof of alternate hospitalization and specialty care coverage. Before students decide to waive, they should review their plan provisions carefully. Students who decide to waive YHP coverage should be aware that all YHP specialty care and hospital services will be billed to their alternate insurance plan. Many plans do not cover medical care outside of their service areas and students will be responsible for the charges.
YHP Prescription/Plus Coverage
Students are also automatically enrolled in the YHP Prescription/Plus Coverage. Students must be members of the YHP Hospitalization/Specialty Care Plan in order to purchase this plan. However, students may waive the plan and still be enrolled in the YHP Hospitalization/Specialty Care Plan. There is an annual $100 deductible as well as a 20 percent copayment for covered charges.
The YHP Prescription/Plus Coverage includes items not covered by the YHP Hospitalization/Specialty Care Plan such as prescription medication, durable medical equipment (braces, insulin pumps, crutches) and also offers additional coverage for inpatient psychiatric and substance abuse services.

Waiving Coverage
Waiver forms must be completed and returned prior to Sept. 15 for the fall term and/or full year, and prior to Jan. 31 for the spring term each year.

Division of Mental Hygiene
The Division of Mental Hygiene provides consultation, evaluation and crisis intervention throughout the year for all members of the Yale Health Plan (YHP). All students are eligible for limited individual or group therapy, free of charge. Other regular YHP members may be referred after evaluation to private practitioners or clinics outside the Yale University Health Services for ongoing treatment. The cost of this treatment is partially covered by a limited co-insurance benefit.

Sex Counseling Service
The Sex Counseling Service of the Yale University Health Services functions through the Division of Mental Hygiene. The service provides counseling for students and members of the Yale Health Plan on problems related to sex. These may include questions and concerns about sexuality, contraception, pregnancy, sexual relations, function and orientation. For information, call 432-1893.
AIDS Resource &
Counseling Center
The AIDS Resource & Counseling Center of Yale University Health Services provides individual, confidential counseling for undergraduates, graduate and professional students, faculty and staff. The center serves as a resource for HIV antibody testing information -- anonymous and confidential -- risk reduction, prevention, support groups and other services available to people with HIV/AIDS and their families and friends.
The center selects and trains student peer educators who present
informational workshops to incoming freshmen and organizations within the
Yale and New Haven communities. This program provides in-
formation on HIV/AIDS prevention, sexually transmitted diseases,
abstinence, contraception, communication and risk reduction. These
workshops and other educational materials, such as pamphlets, brochures
and videos, are available through the center.
Educational and informational programs are also provided for graduate and professional students individually and collectively. Graduate and professional student representatives are involved in designing appropriate activities to target their peers.

Pathways Peer Counseling
Pathways Peer Counseling is a student-staffed service for students with questions about personal, sexual and social problems related to gay, lesbian and bisexual concerns. The confidential service provides information, referrals and a chance to talk. The phone number is 432-1585.
Walden Student-to-Student Counseling
Walden Student-to-Student Counseling is a crisis and non-crisis
counseling service provided by professionally trained counselors for Yale
students in need of an objective sounding board for their emotional,
social and academic problems. The student counselors provide supportive,
sympathetic listening while maintaining strict confidentiality, and are
well informed about other University counseling services. Located in the
basement of Welch Hall, 330 College St., Walden is open seven days a week
for walk-in counseling 8 p.m.-1 a.m. Phone-in counseling is available 8
p.m.-8 a.m. The phone number is 432-4477.
