Parking & Transportation

Nighttime Transportation

The Yale University Parking and Transit Services Department operates the Yale MINIBUS, an evening security transportation service, every night of the year except Thanksgiving, Dec. 24, 25 and 31, Jan. 1 and July 4. The service consists of several small buses which operate as shuttles, 6 p.m.-1 a.m. Pickups are made every 15 minutes at the locations listed below.

* Sterling Hall of Medicine, 333 Cedar St.

* Art & Architecture Building, 180 York St.

* Hall of Graduate Studies, corner of York and Wall streets

* Payne Whitney Gymnasium, Tower Park- way

* Silliman College, 505 College St.

* Becton Center, 15 Prospect St.

* School of Management, 135 Prospect St.

* Pierson Sage Garage, Whitney Avenue between Humphrey and Edwards streets

* Helen Hadley Hall, 420 Temple St.

* Silliman College, College Street between Grove and Wall streets

* Phelps Gate, 344 College St.

Passengers with a valid Yale I.D. will be driven to their dorms or residences if they are within the route boundaries. Persons who are not near the scheduled stops may obtain rides by calling 432-6330 between 6 p.m. and 7 a.m., stating where they are and where they wish to go. They will be told approximately how long they will have to wait. Placing the call about 15 minutes in advance allows for better routing of vehicles and minimizes the waiting time.

The MINIBUS operates throughout the summer. The service, which covers the immediate University, is limited to Yale personnel who are actively engaged in a Yale function. Students will be provided with transportation from their dormitories to another Yale building and then back to their dormitories. Students living in private residences will be provided the same service as long as they live within the route boundaries. There is no residence-to-residence service.

Every day, except during recess periods, service to the railroad station leaves from Phelps Gate every hour from 6:38 p.m. to 11:38 p.m., and departs from the railroad station every hour from 7:10 p.m. to 12:10 a.m. and by call response only between 12:10 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. A reasonable amount of luggage will be accepted. Residence-to-residence service is not available.

Maps and schedules are available at the Sterling Hall of Medicine information desk, 333 Cedar St.; the Visitor Information Center, 149 Elm St.;. and the Parking and Transit Services Office, located on the third floor of 155 Whitney Ave. During severe snow and ice conditions, the routes may be temporarily altered.

Parking Lots

Since parking both at Yale and in New Haven is limited, the University issues parking permits for specific Yale lots in the Yale Parking Service system. On working days, the lots are reserved 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m. for permittees. During non-work hours, the lots are open to all vehicles (4 p.m.-7:30 a.m. on weekdays, and all day and night over the weekend). Exceptions are noted on lot signs. To obtain parking in the Yale system, apply at the Yale Parking and Transit Services office on the third floor of155 Whitney Ave., or call 432-9790.

Shuttle Bus

The University operates a daytime shuttle bus around the campus for all members of the University Monday-Friday, except on employee holidays. Individuals displaying Yale I.D. cards ride free. Non-Yale passengers must deposit 65 cents in exact change in the bus fare box. The buses run on 20-minute schedule from 7:20 a.m. to 10:20 a.m., and from 3:20 p.m. to 6:20 p.m. During the rest of the day, from 10:20 a.m. to 3:20 p.m., the bus runs on a 40-minute schedule.

Special Services Van

Yale Parking Services operates a Special Services Van which transports members of the Yale community who are permanently or temporarily disabled. The service is offered 24 hours a day Monday-Friday, and on Saturday and Sunday from 6 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. Passengers are picked up upon request and transported within the route boundaries. There is no daytime service on weekends. Daytime services is not available during Christmas recess, on Thanksgiving and July 4. Nightime service operates every night of the year except Thanksgiving, Dec. 24, 25 and 31, Jan. 1 and July 4. Rides may be obtained by calling 432-2788.

Getting to the railroad station

Connecticut Transit bus: A2 RR Station/Liberty Street bus, with stops on Orange Street; U2 Woodmont-Milford or J2 Savin Rock-RR Station buses, which stop in front of the church on the corner of Temple and Chapel streets. Connecticut Transit: 624-0151. The current cost is $1, and traveling time is 20 minutes.

Cab: The main pick-up for taxi service is Phelps Gate. Callers from Phelps Gate can expect to wait at least 20 minutes for the cab to arrive. Metro Taxi, 777-7777; New Haven Taxi, 877-0000; Yellow Cab, 777-5555. The approximate cost is $5. Traveling time is approximately 10 minutes.
