Martin Goldsmith, host of "Performance Today" on National Public Radio (NPR), will be the guest speaker at the School of Music Academic Convocation on Thursday, Sept. 3, at 7 p.m. in Morse Recital Hall in Sprague Memorial Hall, 470 College St.
The convocation festivities will celebrate the start of the new academic year and introduce the community to new students and faculty. In addition to Goldsmith's address, the convocation will include remarks by Robert Blocker, the Lucy and Henry Moses Dean of Music, who will present Goldsmith with the school's first Cultural Leadership Citation. There will also be performances by several soloists and ensembles from the School of Music. Admission is free.
Blocker establisshed the Cultural Leadership Citation to recognize individuals who, through volunteer, administrative, educational or journalistic pursuits, enhance the artistic life of their communities and the nation. "Cultural leadership is an important concept, particularly for young musicians about to embark on their careers," says the Dean. "It is the responsibility of artists to offer leadership as educated citizens and in so doing nourish the musical life of their communities."
Goldsmith has served as the host of "Performance Today," NPR's daily
classical music program, since the autumn of 1989. He joined NPR three
years earlier as the show's first music producer. He began his career in
1971 at a commercial classical station in Cleveland, where his mother was
a member of the Cleveland Orchestra. He worked for 12 years at NPR member
station WETA in Washington, where he eventually became program director.
Goldsmith also has performing credits as a French hornist, singer and
actor.
