Yale community invited to tour
and try free workout at new fitness center

Whether they're fitness buffs or couch potatoes, members of the Yale community can receive a complimentary workout in the Payne Whitney Gymnasium's new recreational fitness center during the month of September.

The facility, named in honor of Adrian C. "Ace" Israel '36, is designed to meet the varied exercise and fitness needs of all Yale students, faculty and staff.

The 13,000-square-foot space features more than 110 new pieces of cardiovascular, circuit training and free weight equipment.

This equipment includes 12 stair climbers; 8 recumbent bicycles; 8 elliptical trainers; 2 upper-body and 2 lower-body cross trainers; 12 treadmills; 4 upright bicycles; 12 rowing ergometers; 6 bench press stations; 6 incline bench stations; 6 squat stations; 10 Olympic bars; multiple sets of dumbells; and speciality free weight items. In addition, the facility features 33 new pieces of Cybex circuit training machines..

The Israel Center also includes six television monitors in the facility's cardiovascular area, where people who are exercising can watch CNN News or ESPN Sports.

Staff, faculty and students are invited to tour the Israel Center during the month of September. Tours leave from the lobby of the gym at the following dates and times: Tuesday, Sept. 1, at 12:30 p.m.; Thursday, Sept. 3, at 5:15 p.m.; Saturday, Sept. 5, at noon; Tuesday, Sept. 8, at 5:15 p.m.; Thursday, Sept. 10, at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, at noon; Wednesday, Sept. 16, at 12:30 p.m. and again at 5:15 p.m.; and Saturday, Sept. 19, at noon.

Non-gym members will receive a free, complimentary workout at the facility at their convenience.

The Payne Whitney Gym will also be introducing new hours of operation for the 1998-99 academic year. The gym will now be open 7 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday-Friday throughout the semester. It will also be open weekends
10 a.m.-5:30 p.m.

The Payne Whitney Gymnasium is located on Tower Parkway. In addition to the fitness center, it includes a pool and squash courts, and offers physical education classes.
