SOM changes name of degree to M.B.A.

The faculty of the School of Management (SOM) voted on Sept. 1 to change the name of the degree the school now offers from an M.P.P.M. (Master of Public and Private Management) to an M.B.A. (Master in Business Administration).

"The change in degree nomenclature is appropriate for the times," said SOM Dean Jeffrey E. Garten in announcing the decision. "Our applicant pool is increasingly global; our students are seeking great jobs all over the world; and the M.B.A. has become recognizable everywhere as the standard credential for professional success."

Garten went on to say that SOM has been a major innovator in graduate business education since its founding 22 years ago. He pointed to the school's early emphasis on teamwork and on using business skills for leadership across sectors -- business, government and nonprofit institutions. This core mission, Garten said, would remain at the center of SOM's curriculum and other activities. "We will still be offering an M.B.A.-plus," he said.

In the last three years, during Garten's tenure as dean, SOM has seen several changes. The number of students applying has increased 27 percent, to the highest level in the school's history; the number of firms coming to recruit graduates is up 88 percent; and the percentage of alumni providing financial support has reached 54 percent, making SOM the number-two Ivy League business school in this category.

In addition, SOM has opened a new International Center for Finance and established a special program focusing on emerging markets such as China, Brazil and Russia.

Last spring SOM embarked on a major expansion of the senior faculty with the goal of increasing the number of tenured professors by 60 percent -- with the focus on finance, accounting and business strategy -- while holding the total number of students constant.
