Casa Otoñal to honor architect César Pelli

At its 22nd anniversary celebration, Casa Otoñal will pay tribute to César Pelli, former dean of the School of Architecture and the architect who designed the cultural center, which is located at 135 Sylvan Ave. in New Haven.

"By honoring Mr. Pelli, we pay homage to the power of architecture to strengthen communities and improve the lives of those who dwell in them," reads the invitation for the anniversary celebration, which will be held at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 15, at Anthony's Oceanview Restaurant, 450 Lighthouse Rd. in New Haven.

The invitation also notes: "Our community comes together in creating cultural monuments as well as physical ones from the buildings that house minority senior citizens, inter-generational programs, educational opportunities and social services, as we celebrate a past and a future, anchored in the design of César Pelli and the spirit of the surrounding spaces."

Pelli, now a critic at the School of Architecture, will give a presentation on community building and architecture. He will be introduced by Yale trustee José A. Cabranes, a judge in the U.S. Court of Appeals, who will serve as master of ceremonies for the event. Live salsa music by the Latin band Agua Pa Chocolate will also highlight the event.

Tickets are $50. Proceeds will benefit the center. For information, call 773-1847.
