Yale, community collaborate to cheer on AIDS fundraisers
bicycling through Elm City

With pedals pumping and spokes spinning, approximately 3,500 bike riders will make their way through the streets of New Haven on Friday, Sept. 18.

The bicyclists will be on their way from Boston to New York as part of AIDS Ride 4, an effort to raise funds for AIDS agencies in or near those two municipalities. They'll be passing through New Haven en route to an overnight stay in Bridgeport.

As they journey through the streets of the Elm City, the bike riders will be treated to a special welcome being planned by Yale, the City of New Haven, the Greater New Haven Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce, the Community Foundation for Greater New Haven, Town Green Special Services District, Leeway and Richters.

The riders will enter New Haven on Whitney Avenue, then take Temple Street to Grove Street and turn onto College Street, which will be closed to traffic between the hours of 11:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. A special table will be set up by the Green, where the bicyclists can partake of cookies and water. There, the riders will also be given a special banner for their bikes bearing a logo indicating that they visited New Haven, one o f the winners of this year's "All-American City" awards. The bicyclists will then continue their journey down College Street, through the Medical Center area and out of the city.

"We're looking for volunteers, people who are willing to come out along the route and cheer on the bikers with signs and words of encouragement," says Daisy Rodriguez, director for community relations in Yale's Office of New Haven Affairs, adding, " We want not only to demonstrate our appreciation for the good work they're doing, but to show them what a great city this is, so they will return again and visit someday."

Anyone who is interested in volunteering for this project can contact Rodriguez at 432-4488.
