General Information

Information Hours: Friday 9 a.m.­4:30 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m.­4 p.m. Come by

Table the Visitor Information Center, 149 Elm St., for additional copies of the Parents' Weekend schedule, copies of the Yale Bulletin and Calendar, campus maps, and for other kinds of general information and assistance. Tickets for Friday evening's Whiffenpoof/Whim 'n Rhythm concert will be on sale there during the afternoon.

Schedule of Events

Friday, October 9

Lunch 11:30 a.m.­1:15 p.m. Lunch in the residential colleges. (Berkeley College families are welcome in any of the other eleven colleges.)

Special Tours 12­1 p.m. Tour and demonstration of the Yale Memorial Carillon by members of the Yale University Guild of Carillonneurs. Meet at
Branford Gate, High Street. Participants must be prepared to climb 170 stairs before reaching the carillon playing cabin!

1:30­2:30 & 3­4 p.m. A guided tour of the Peabody Museum of Natural History, 170 Whitney Avenue. Free admission for parents
and family members.

Faculty 2:00­3:00 p.m. "Reþections of a Senior Lector: a perspective on

Lectures language learning and teaching at Yale today," by Ruth Koizim, Senior Lector of French. Linsly-Chittenden Hall, 63 High St., Room 211.

2:00­3:00 p.m. "The economic unification of Germany in the 19th century," by Timothy Guinnane, Associate Professor of Economics. Linsly-Chittenden Hall, 63 High St., Room 101.

3:15­4:15 p.m. "John Locke on Personal Identity," by Michael Della Rocca, Associate Professor of Philosophy. Room 201, Sudler Hall, in William L. Harkness Hall (entrance from College St.).

Panel 4:45­6 p.m. "Yale College Life," moderated by Betty Trachtenberg,

Discussion Associate Dean of Yale College, Dean of Student Affairs. Panelists: Richard Chavolla, Assistant Dean of Yale College, Director of the
Chicano and Native American Cultural Centers; Harvey Goldblatt, Master of Pierson College, Chairman and Professor of Slavic Languages and Literature; Nicole Parisier, Dean of Branford College; Mark Schenker, Associate Dean of Yale College, Dean of Academic Affairs. There will be an opportunity for parents to ask questions. Sudler Recital Hall in William L. Harkness Hall, 100 Wall St.

Theater 8 p.m. "Desire Under the Elms," by Eugene O'Neill, presented by the Yale Dramatic Association. Yale Repertory Theatre, 1120 Chapel St. Admission: $5 students, $9 adults. Call (203) 432-1210.

Forum 8:30 p.m. Jacob and Hilda Blaustein Friday Night Forum with Roger Kamenetz '70, author of "The Jew and the Lotus," discussing God, poetry and Yale, followed by the Henry N. Cohn Family Oneg Shabbat. Joseph Slifka Center, 80 Wall Street.

Concerts 8 p.m. Philharmonia Orchestra of Yale: an all-Stravinsky program featuring the Firebird Suite, Petroushka, and the Rite of Spring. Woolsey Hall, corner of Grove and College Streets. Free admission. Pre-concert discussion at 7 p.m., Morse Recital Hall in Sprague Memorial Hall.

9 p.m. Parents' Weekend Jam, featuring the Whiffenpoofs & Whim
'n Rhythm, the two senior a capella singing groups. Battell Chapell, corner of College and Elm streets, $10 students, $15 adults. Tickets available at the Information Table on Friday afternoon at the Visitor Information Center, 149 Elm St. Call 776-0723 for more information.

Saturday, October 10

Continental 7­10 a.m. Continental breakfast will be served in Calhoun and Ezra

Breakfast Stiles colleges only.

Refreshments 8:30­9:45 a.m. Complimentary coffee, tea, and pastry. Information

Panel 10­11:15 a.m. "Education in Yale College," moderated by Richard

Discussion H. Brodhead, Dean of Yale College. Panelists: Sidney Altman, Sterling Professor of Biology; Donald Brown, Philip R. Allen Professor of Economics; John Lewis Gaddis, Robert A. Lovett Professor of Military & Naval History; and Annabel Patterson, the Karl Young Professor of English. There will be an opportunity for parents to ask questions. Woolsey Hall, corner of Grove and College Streets.

Brunch 11 a.m.­1 p.m. Brunch in the residential colleges. (Berkeley College families should go to Commons dining hall in Woolsey Hall.)

Special Tours 11:30 a.m. Museum Masterpiece Tour of the Yale University Art Gallery, conducted by a docent of the Gallery. 1111 Chapel St.
Free admission.

12­1 p.m. Tour and demonstration of the Yale Memorial Carillon

Yale­ 11 a.m.­4:30 p.m. Buses from Payne Whitney Gymnasium to the Yale

Holy Cross Bowl will leave every 10 to 15 minutes; the schedule will be posted at

football game the Gym, 70 Tower Parkway. The Yale­Holy Cross football game begins at 1 p.m. Pre-purchased tickets may be picked up at the Will Call Window at the Yale Bowl (outside Portal 17).

Buffet Dinner 5­7 p.m. Gala buffet dinner in the residential colleges. (Berkeley College families should go to Commons dining hall in Woolsey Hall.)

Parents' Weekend Gala Concert featuring the Yale Symphony Orchestra (Respighi "Pines of Rome"), the Yale Concert Band (Shostakovich "Festive Overture", director Thomas C. Duffy "Pilgrim's Progress", and Nancy Galbraith "Danza de los Duendes"), and the Yale Glee Club (motets by Mikolaj Zielenski and Josquin des Prez, spirituals, and traditional Yale songs). Woolsey Hall, corner of Grove and College Streets. Free admission. (A reception will follow the concert in Room 201 Hendrie Hall, 165 Elm Street.)

8:00 p.m. The Baker's Dozen & Proof of the Pudding, two undergraduate a capella singing groups. Davenport College dining hall,

Open House 10:30 a.m.­1 p.m. Open House and brunch at the Joseph Slifka

Brunch Center for Jewish Life at Yale, 80 Wall St. Those interested in the schedule of Shabbat services and special Sukkot events should consult that Yale Bulletin and Calendar.
