New postage stamp to fund breast cancer research to be unveiled Oct. 24

In observance this October of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Yale Cancer Center and the United States Postal Service will hold a special dedication ceremony for the new breast cancer research postage stamp. The event, which will also feature an overview of the latest advances in breast cancer research and the presentation of an award to a breast cancer survivor, will take place on Saturday, Oct. 24, 10 a.m.-11:30 p.m. in the cafeteria of Yale-New Haven Hospital, 20 York St.

The Breast Cancer Research Stamp is the result of the Stamp Out Breast Cancer Act approved by Congress last year. As the nation's first "semipostal" stamp, it is priced above the first-class mail rate with an additional charge earmarked for a charitable purpose. The stamp sells for 40 cents with net proceeds of the additional eight cents donated to two government agencies conducting breast cancer research: the National Institutes of Health and the Medical Research Program of the Department of Defense.

Several breast cancer survivors will be present at the event, including Julia Trotta, who was diagnosed with the disease 65 years ago, when she was 16 years old. Trotta, who was recently diagnosed with another form of cancer, will receive a special award honoring her courage and determination in battling the disease.

Dr. Michael Reiss, director of the breast cancer research program at the Yale Cancer Center, will present an overview of the latest advances in breast cancer research being conducted at the center. As a National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center, the Yale Cancer Center's mission includes translating basic scientific research performed in the laboratory to cancer care for patients in the clinic. Hundreds of different research studies are promising bold new approaches to the treatment of breast cancer, as well as developing more effective treatments, with fewer side effects for patients, from already existing therapies.

During the program, Another Octave Connecticut Women's Chorus will provide entertainment. Free parking is available in Lot 2 on Park Street and Frontage Road. Refreshments will be provided. Reservations are required and may be made by calling (203) 688-2000.

In addition to this event, the obstetrics and gynecology department at the Yale Health Plan will offer special programs in observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. For information on this program, see story below.
