'U.N. Responses to Insecurity' honors contributions of Yale political scientist

The public is invited to attend "U.N. Responses to Insecurity," a conference taking place Friday and Saturday, Oct. 23 and 24, in Rm. 101 of Luce Hall, 34 Hillhouse Ave. The event is sponsored by the Academic Council on the United Nations System and United Nations Studies at Yale.

The conference -- which honors James S. Sutterlin, lecturer in political science, for his contribution to the international community -- will examine the roles of U.S. foreign policy, early warning and arms control, humanitarian action, economic sanctions, NGOs and regional arrangements in U.N. responses to insecurity.

Friday's presentations will begin at 3 p.m. with "U.S. Foreign Policy Towards the United Nations" by Charles William Maynes of the Eurasia Foundation and "Peacekeeping, Peace-Enforcement and Everything in Between" by Brian Urquhart, a former United Nations under-secretary-general. Sutterlin will present a paper written by James Jonah, Sierra Leone's minister of finance, on "Early Warning and Prevention, Rhetoric or Reality?" and Virginia Gamba of the Institute for Security Studies in South Africa will discuss "The Management of Arms in Conflict Resolution Processes."

The presentations will be followed by
a biographical tribute to Sutterlin and a reception.

Saturday's discussions on various topics regarding U.N. responses to insecurity will begin at 9 a.m. For more information, contact Bridget Gillich at 432-6512 or acuns@yale.edu.
