International array of Pushkin enthusiasts to discuss Russian poet's 'chamber' plays

The department of Slavic languages and literatures will present an international conference honoring the 200th anniversary of Russian poet Alexander Pushkin's birth on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 24 and 25, in Rm. 211 of the Hall of Graduate Studies, 320 York St. The event, titled "A View of Pushkin's 'Little Tragedies,'" is being organized by Yale faculty members Robert Louis Jackson, the B.E. Bensinger Professor of Slavic Languages and Literatures, and Vladimir Golstein, associate professor of Slavic languages and literatures, along with Brown University professor Svetlana Evdokimova.

Speakers will focus on Pushkin's "chamber" plays: "The Covetous Knight," "Mozart and Salieri," "The Stone Guest" and "The Feast at the Time of the Plague." Participants will include Vladimir Alexandrov, professor of Russian literature and Slavic languages and literatures; Nancy Anderson, acquisitions assistant at the Beinecke Library; and members of the faculties of renowned institutions throughout the country and in Russia, including the University of St. Petersberg and Harvard, Princeton, Northwestern and Columbia universities, among others.

Papers will be read 9 a.m.-noon and 2-
5 p.m. on Saturday, and 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
