In workshops presented by the Yale-New Haven Teachers Institute, city teachers collaborate with Yale experts to develop classroom programs.

Yale & the New Haven Public Schools:
Initiatives Aiding City Teachers in Curriculum Development

Yale is also a resource for the teachers in New Haven Public Schools, with University faculty forging collegial relationships with City instructors through several programs aimed at strengthening the schools' curriculum. These include:

Yale-New Haven Teachers Institute

The Yale-New Haven Teachers Institute is an educational partnership between the University and the New Haven Public Schools designed to strengthen teaching and learning in local schools and, by example, in schools across the country.

Through the Yale-New Haven Teachers Institute, University faculty members and school teachers work together in a collegial relationship. Each participating teacher becomes an Institute Fellow and prepares a curriculum unit to be taught the following year.

Studies have shown that the Institute experience increases teachers' preparation in their disciplines, raises their morale, heightens their expectations of their
students, encourages them to remain in teaching in New Haven and, in turn, enhances student performance.
Curriculum units that participants developed are used extensively in school courses.

More than one-third of all humanities teachers in the New Haven Public Schools have participated in the Institute.

Biodiversity and Human Health Program

New Haven instructors are teaching their students about the vital relationship between human health and the health of the natural world with the help of a new program sponsored by the Peabody Museum of Natural History.

The Peabody Fellows Biodiversity and Human Health Program is part of a system-wide reform in science education in the City's schools. The program includes courses for teachers and interactive mobile science units that promote science literacy in grades 3 through 8.

International Education

The Yale Center for International and Area Studies offers the Program in International Educational Resources (PIER) to teachers in New Haven Public Schools. PIER brings together teachers from around the nation for two-week intensive summer institutes in International Studies, Russian and East European Studies, African Studies and East Asian Studies.

The PIER Teaching Resource Collection offers nearly 2,000 audiovisual items and 5,000 print items for free loan to area schools.
