Yale University is an important part of the New Haven arts scene, contributing both through its own innovative programs and through its sponsorship of other City arts and cultural events.
Each year Yale sponsors hundreds of exhibits, concerts and plays featuring world-class artists and performers. Many of these activities are open to the public free of charge.
Yale is a major sponsor of the International Festival of Arts & Ideas, one of the largest celebrations of global arts and culture in the United States. The event brings over 100,000 people to New Haven for a diverse offering of displays, performances and lectures by groups and individuals from around the world. Many of these activities take place on the Yale campus, and the University sponsors several off-campus events -- such as last year's performance of the New York Metropolitan Opera on the New Haven Green. Yale faculty also offer mini-courses during the festival.
The University has long supported the New Haven Jazz Festival, and last summer Yale was the main sponsor of the free concert series, which featured the noted artists Ray Charles, Dianne Reeves and Pancho Sanchez.
Yale's Whitney Humanities Center is one of the major venues of Film Fest New Haven, a celebration of the works of independent filmmakers that has grown in scope and popularity over the years.
The University also is a sponsor of the City-wide Open Studios, in which area artists -- including many from Yale -- invite the public into their creative spaces.
