ARTS AT YALE|SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT|DECEMBER 2006

This harpsichord is one of nearly 1,000 historic instruments housed at the Yale Collection of Musical Instruments. Artists from around the world perform on these instruments in concerts sponsored by the collection.

Yale Collection of Musical Instruments

The Collection of Musical Instruments is one of the world's most notable repositories of rare and historical instruments -- nearly 1,000 all told.

These include over 100 keyboard instruments, as well as violins by Stradivarius and his German predecessor Jakob Stainer; 18th-century French and German guitars; and wind instruments by nearly all of the leading 19th-century European and American makers. In recent years, the collection has also been expanded to include Asian, African and South American instruments.

Many of the instruments have been restored to playing condition and can be heard in concerts presented by the collection, featuring artists from around the world.
