The use of natural materials and natural light in the Yale Center for British Art create a unique space for the viewing of great works.

Yale Center for British Art

Presented to the University by Paul Mellon (Class of 1929), the Yale Center for British Art houses the largest and most comprehensive collection of British art outside the United Kingdom. The collection of paintings, sculpture, prints, drawings, rare books and manuscripts reflects the development of British art and culture from the Elizabethan period onward. On view are works by Joshua Reynolds, George Stubbs, Thomas Gainsborough, J.M.W. Turner and John Constable, as well as artists from Europe and America who lived and worked in Britain. The center offers a year-round schedule of free exhibitions and programs. Resources include the Reference Library, Conservation Laboratory and Study Room for examining prints, drawings, rare books and manuscripts. Opened to the public in 1977, the center is among the final buildings designed by architect Louis Kahn. Its design uses natural materials and sky-lit rooms to create a unique environment for viewing works of art.
