In its 40-year history, the theater has produced nearly 100 world and American premieres by such playwrights as Lee Blessing, Athol Fugard, John Guare, Suzan-Lori Parks, Sam Shepard and August Wilson. Among the respected actors who have performed at the Yale Rep are Glenn Close, Colleen Dewhurst, Danny Glover, James Earl Jones, Jason Robards and Sam Waterston.

Ten Yale Rep productions have advanced to Broadway, garnering nearly 40 Tony Award nominations and eight Tonys. In 1991, the Yale Rep itself was honored with the Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theater.

The Yale Rep, in collaboration with the School of Drama, has also been instilling an appreciation of all things theatric in area youngsters through its Shakespeare-themed "Will Power!" program and the Dwight-Edgewood Project for young playwrights.
