Graduates of the School of Music fill the ranks of major orchestras, chamber ensembles and opera companies from New York to Barcelona to Shanghai. The Metropolitan Opera in New York City alone has placed over a dozen Yale graduates on its roster in recent years.
Fully one-third of the Pulitzer Prizes for musical composition have gone to faculty or alumni of the school. These include Aaron Jay Kernis, Lewis Spratlan and Yehudi Wyner.
Yale's renowned faculty -- led by virtuoso pianist Dean Robert Blocker -- are called on annually to perform or lead classes in major concert venues and conservatories around the world. The School of Music presents over 300 concerts every year featuring faculty, students and guest artists. Most of these are open to the public free of charge. The school also sponsors numerous programs aimed at sparking an appreciation of music among area schoolchildren.
The school draws about 40% of its students from abroad, and it has partnerships with leading conservatories overseas. Thanks to a $100 million gift from an anonymous donor, the school's leadership role in higher education is secure, with strengthened and expanded programs, a renowned faculty and talented students who now attend the school tuition-free. Another gift, from Yale School of Music alumnus Mitch Leigh, has established a professorship in jazz in the name of Willie Ruff, both an alumnus of the school and a faculty member there -- thus, ensuring the Yale School of Music a place as a leading educational center of this uniquely American art form.
