ARTS AT YALE|SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT|DECEMBER 2006

Yale Schola Cantorum is one of the groups affiliated with the Yale Institute of Sacred Music, an organization devoted to the study of the religious arts.

Yale Institute of Sacred Music

The Institute of Sacred Music promotes the interdisciplinary study and practice of sacred music, worship and the religious arts. It works in partnership with the School of Music to train choral conductors, organists and singers who are interested in understanding the religious roots and contemporary application of the music they perform. With the Divinity School, it educates students in liturgical studies and religion and the arts.

Graduates of the institute become church musicians, ministers, scholars, teachers, performers and informed lay people.

Institute faculty and students take a leadership role in worship services on campus. The institute presents a wide variety of cultural programming, including public performances by the Yale Camerata, the Yale Schola Cantorum and the Marquand Gospel Choir, among other groups. It also brings distinguished organists from around the world to perform on Yale's 12,000-pipe Newberry Memorial Organ. As an interdisciplinary center, the Institute of Sacred Music also offers art exhibitions, literary readings and multimedia events, as well as a full schedule of concerts and recitals during the year.
