The first Tercentennial edition of the William Clyde DeVane Lecture series was devoted to "Democratic Vistas."
For the first time, text, audio and video versions of all the lectures and the follow-up discussion were available online shortly after being delivered.
Also, instead of the usual format of featuring one Yale scholar, the Tercentennial lectures were presented by 15 prominent Yale faculty, each speaking on a different aspect of "democracy." They are: President Richard C. Levin; Deans Anthony Kronman, Richard H. Brodhead and Richard Benson; and Yale faculty members Bruce Ackerman, Mahzarin Banaji, David Bromwich, Stephen Carter, Nancy Cott, Michael Denning, John Gaddis, David Gelernter, James Scott, Ian Shapiro and Joan Steitz.
Kronman, who organized the series and delivered the first lecture, noted that the series' theme, "Democratic Vistas," is particularly appropriate to explore in the Tercentennial series, because Yale's 300-year history is "interwoven with that of American democracy in countless ways."
This fall, the DeVane Lectures are examining Yale's contributions to the field of architecture. Led by School of Architecture Dean Robert A.M. Stern, the series also features prominent alumni in the field.
