Courses abroad. This past summer, almost 100 students took Yale College courses, not in New Haven, but in seven different countries, from Mexico to Kenya to several points in Europe.
This is the third year that Yale Summer Programs has offered undergraduates an opportunity to go abroad during the summer for courses taught by University faculty members and to bring back Yale credits.
Nine courses in all were offered this year, many of them intermediate intensive language courses. Students had the opportunity to learn German in Berlin, French in Paris, Italian in Amelia, Russian in St. Petersburg, Kiswahili in Kenya and Nahuatl, an indigenous language, in southern Mexico. Along with their instructors, the students spent four to eight weeks in these locales, perfecting their language skills while studying the culture of their home-away-from-home.
Other courses abroad were taught in English. For example, at a course held in Prague, 16 students learned about film and fiction in Kafka's home city, while collaborating with faculty from the Film and Television School of the Academy of Performing Arts. Some students stayed with families, some in dormitories and some shared apartments.
