Fellowships and internships. This summer, the Yale Center for International and Area Studies (YCIAS) supported nearly 350 students who pursued research, academic studies and internships abroad with grants and fellowships totaling just under $2.3 million. Meanwhile, center staff worked on a University-wide searchable database of these grants and fellowships that will be online this fall. In addition, plans for the new Graduate Certificates of Concentration in African Studies, European Studies, Latin American Studies and Modern Middle East Studies were finalized and are now available to students.
PIER programs. Through Programs in International Educational Resources (PIER), the outreach arm of YCIAS, more than 100 educators from around the country participated in intensive summer institutes on the themes "Cold War in Context," "China in Transition," "Portraits of Brazil," "Fulbright-Hays Group Project Abroad to Ghana" and "Understanding Islamic Societies." In conjunction with two of these institutes, 14 teachers traveled to Ghana and 15 went to China to do field study.
