Children's Literacy Initiative. The Whiffenpoofs of 2004 concluded a three-month tour in August, which included stops both in the United States and abroad. Over the past year, and especially during its summer tour, the group donated its time and money to help raise awareness about the importance of children's literacy, raising a total of $40,000.
As part of their Children's Literacy Initiative this summer, the Whiffenpoofs gave performances to benefit local reading organizations in Shanghai, China and Goa, India; visited a Life Community Services children's shelter in George, South Africa, where they sang for local children and performed with youngsters from the George Child Welfare program at a fundraiser; and presented a benefit concert in Cape Town, South Africa, for Imibala, which raised enough money to sponsor and support 75 children in Somerset West for one year of school, including uniforms, books and tuition.
