Students to present two nights
of scenes from famous operas

Excerpts from eight operas from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries will be presented over the course of two evenings this week by young artists in the Yale Opera program at the School of Music.

"Two Evenings of Opera Scenes" will be held on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 30 and 31, at 8 p.m. each evening in Morse Recital Hall of Sprague Memorial Hall, 470 College St. Tickets are $5; $3 for students. For information, call 432-4158.

The singers, who will be accompanied by a pianist, will present a different program each night. Over the course of the two evenings, the performers will stage scenes from Mozart's "Idomeno," Menotti's "The Consul," Rossini's "The Barber of Seville," Verdi's "Falstaff," Stravinsky's "The Rake's Progress," Tchaikovsky's "Eugen Onegin," Leoncavallo's "Pagliacci" and Donzetti's "Elixir of Love."

Andreas Prohaska, whose work throughout his native Germany and Austria brought him to the attention of Yale Opera's artistic director Doris Yarick-Cross, is the stage director for the scenes.

Considered one of the most successful programs of its kind in the nation, Yale Opera emphasizes the practical study of the art of opera performance, offering a thorough musical training that includes languages, style, acting, body movement and general stage skills. Many of the program's graduates have been selected for leading roles in major opera houses and festivals all over the world.
