Yale affiliates garner prizes in Society
for Cinema Studies' book competition

Two members of the Yale faculty and an alumnus of the University have won prizes in the Katherine S. Kovács Book Award competition sponsored by the Society for Cinema Studies.

The winner of the top prize in the competition is Joshua Gamson, associate professor of American studies and sociology, for his book "Freaks Talk Back: Tabloid Talk Shows and Sexual Nonconformity."

Charles Musser, associate professor and director of undergraduate studies in film studies, won honorable mention for his book "Edison Motion Picutres, 1890-1900: An Annotated Filmography." Musser is a previous winner of the Kovác's Book Award for his volume "The Emergency of Cinema."

Also receiving an honorable mention is Donald Crafton, who earned his Ph.D. at the University and was a member of the faculty in the history of art department for many years.

Musser and Crafton were among only three individuals who won honorable mentions in the competition, and Gamson is the sole winner of the Kovács Book Award. They will be honored at in awards banquet in April in West Palm Beach, Florida.
