'Yale Constructs'
Program will explore future plans for campus facilities

Yale's immediate and long-term plans for its physical facilities will be the focus of a public program being sponsored by the School of Architecture Friday-Sunday, April 9-11.

Titled "Yale Constructs: Planning and Building for the University's Fourth Century," the program will focus on three themes -- renovation of Yale's architectural heritage, long-range planning and new construction.

Highlighting the event will be talks by Yale officials about new and future initiatives; lectures by the architects for recent campus building or renovation projects; and tours of six campus structures that are "works in progress."

Living laboratory. "The University, with its many and varied projects, is a living laboratory of contemporary architecture," says Robert A.M. Stern, dean of the School of Architecture. "'Yale Constructs' will provide us with an extraordinary opportunity to see through the eyes of practitioners how a host of different real-world design challenges are being met, both in new construction and in bringing older buildings into the next century.

"We will also have a chance to consider the direction Yale plans to take in the years ahead and learn of new initiatives between the University and the City of New Haven," he notes.

In addition to the Architecture Dean, other speakers from Yale will include President Richard C. Levin; Vice President and Director of New Haven and State Affairs Bruce Alexander; Vice President for Finance and Administration Joseph P. Mullinix; and Vincent Scully, Sterling Professor Emeritus of the History of Art.

Architectural Heritage

The program will open on Friday at 6:30 p.m. with a session titled "A Worthy Heritage." After introductory remarks by Robert Stern, Vincent Scully will present an overview of "The Architecture of Yale University."

Saturday morning's session will focus on "Renewing an Architectural Heritage." It will begin at 9:15 a.m. with a talk titled "Lost Yale" by Catherine Lynn, an architectural historian and preservationist.

The rest of the morning will be devoted to presentations about some of Yale's existing facilities by the architects who designed them.
