The Connecticut Commission on National and Community Service (CCNCS) has awarded a grant to the Dwight Hall College Mentoring Coalition -- a coalition of Dwight Hall member organizations involved in youth mentoring. The group was one of 16 Connecticut programs across the state selected for the grants, which range from $10,000 to $25,000. Through the grant, the coalition developed a Youth Mentors Forum, held in February, which provided an opportunity for Yale students who serve as mentors to reflect upon their experiences in the community and to discuss issues they share. The Yale mentoring programs that are partners in the CCNCS Youth Mentoring Grant are Future Bound/Project SAT, Juvenile Justice League, Katherine Brennan Mentoring, Luther House Tutoring, SMArt, WYSE and Youth Together.

The Council for Advancement and Support of Education has awarded Yale Medicine, a quarterly publication for alumni of the School of Medicine, a bronze medal in its District 1 Publications Awards Program. Yale Medicine won the award in the magazine category in recognition of "superior achievement and creativity." Staff writer John Curtis was on hand to accept the award at a ceremony held in Boston. Michael Kashgarian, Jane Reynolds and Michael Fitzsousa are editor-in-chief, publisher and editor, respectively.

Nancy Cott, the Stanley Woodward Professor of History and American Studies, was one of three invited speakers at a White House Millennium Evening on March 15. The event, which was hosted by President Bill Clinton and Hillary Rodham Clinton, focused on "Women as Citizens: Vital Voices through the Century." Discussion centered on the history of American women in civic life in the the 20th century, including their role as volunteers and reformers and their struggle for rights. Cott spoke about women and political rights in an interactive discussion that included the President, the First Lady, the two other invited speakers and an invited audience. The group also answered questions raised via the Internet. Cott is currenly on a leave of absence to work as a fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in Behavioral Sciences on the campus of Stanford University.
