Feminist Friedan will take part in 'Women and Freedom' conference Betty Friedan, a founder of the feminist movement, and celebrated author Grace Paley will be among the speakers at a four-day conference, titled "Cherut: Jewish Women and Freedom," to be held on campus Thursday-Sunday, April 15-18. Over 200 students and some 40 speakers will meet for lectures and seminars exploring the theme of Jewish women and freedom in tradition as well as in the past, present and future. Seminar topics will include "Radical Tradition: Painting Eve in a New Form," "Freedom in God or Freedom in Lenin: The Last Shtetl Women," "Women in the Jewish Resistance During the Holocaust," and "A 21st Century Agenda for the Israeli Feminist Movement." Most events will take place at the Joseph Slifka Center for Jewish Life at Yale, 80 Wall St. The conference will also feature a "Freedom" concert with internationally renowned singer/songwriter Debbie Friedman, and a tribute to the late Bella Abzug by her daughter Liz Abzug. The concert will take place on Saturday, April 17, at 9 p.m. at the Law School, 127 Wall St. Tickets are $18 for adults and $6 for students. The tribute to Bella Abzug will be held on Sunday, 10:30 a.m. at the Slifka Center. It is free and open to the public, as are conference lectures.
Those wishing to attend the conference as a whole must register in advance. Registration is required for the seminars and meals. The fee of $72 for adults and $20 for Yale students ($36 for non-Yale students) will cover seminars, lectures, the Debbie Friedman concert, and lunches.
