Steere Prize

The Yale University Women's & Gender Studies Program will again award the Steere Prize in Women's & Gender Studies. The $100 prize is for the senior essay which best exemplifies advance in scholarship gained by focusing on women or gender roles and/or by employing feminist theory. Senior essays written by majors in any department as well as by Women's & Gender Studies majors are eligible.

A committee of faculty associated with the Women's & Gender Studies Program will consider entries from all departments. The winner will be announced and a certificate awarded at graduation. Essays must be submitted (two copies) to the Women's & Gender Studies Program Office, 315 William L. Harkness Hall, 100 Wall St., by 4 p.m. Monday, April 26, to be considered, and should include the student's name, address, telephone number and major department.


Project Spring Cleaning

The department of athletics is holding its fifth annual Project Spring Cleaning and asks for donations of used sports equipment, games and children's books for distribution to local groups and youth agencies. Weekday collections will begin Monday, April 19 and end Friday, April 30 at the following campus drop-off points: Payne Whitney Gym lobby, 70 Tower Pkwy., 7 a.m.-10 p.m.; main lobby, 155 Whitney Ave., 9 a.m.-5 p.m.; and main lobby, Sterling Hall of Medicine, 333 Cedar St., 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

Also, on Saturday, May 1, the department of athletics van will make a limited number of house calls for equipment and items donors are not able to transport on their own. Donors must call Dawn Leary at 432-1431 on Friday, April 23 during normal work hours to schedule a home pick-up. Pick-ups will be limited to New Haven and adjacent communities.

Blood drive

An American Red Cross blood drive for undergraduate students will take place Monday-Thursday, April 19-22, at Dwight Hall on High Street. Students should make an appointment for blood donation by contacting drive coordinator Lauren Leikin at 436-1045.


Library Week celebration

"InfoFair: A Celebration of National Library Week at the Cushing/Whitney Medical Library" will take place Tuesday, April 20, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in the medical library foyer, 333 Cedar St. The event will include demonstrations of electronic document delivery, a Web-TV CHF patient compliance program, web-based gene sequencing software, and the New Health web site. Faculty tour of library

Special tours for Yale faculty of the Library Shelving Facility, 147 Leeder Hill Rd., Hamden, will be given Thursday, April 22, at 1:30, 2:30 and 4 p.m. The tours last about 30 minutes. Transportation will be provided; directions are available for those who prefer to drive themselves. Faculty members who plan to attend are asked to contact Danuta Nitecki at 432-1818 or Jeong Park at jeong.park@yale.edu.


Student prizes

The Williams Prize in East Asian Studies is awarded to an undergraduate in any department for an outstanding paper completed during the current academic year on a Chinese, Japanese or Korean subject. A faculty endorsement, usually a signature, is required for each copy of each submision. Course papers may be submitted; the faculty endorsement does not have to be from the professor for whom the paper was written. An original and three copies of the paper should be deposited at the Council on East Asian Studies office, Rm. 320, Luce Hall, 34 Hillhouse Ave. The deadline for submission of papers is Friday, April 23 at 4 p.m.

The Elga Ruth Wasserman Award is a $100 grant given annually by the Women's & Gender Studies Program to a Yale undergraduate for a summer project, whether academic or activist, on women, gender, sexuality or a related topic. The prize was established in 1994 by friends and colleagues to honor Elga Ruth Wasserman, who served 1969-73 as special assistant to the president on the education of women, ushering in coeducation at Yale. A two-page proposal is due Monday, April 26 at 4 p.m. at the Women's & Gender Studies office, 315 William L. Harkness Hall, 100 Wall St. Proposals should include the student's name, address, telephone number, major department, year of graduation and college. Copies also may be faxed to 432-8475.


Essay awards

The following awards, open to all Yale College undergraduates, are presented annually by the Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library.

The Howard Roberts Lamar prize will be awarded forthe best essay on a topic in the history or culture of the American West. The prize carries a stipend of $150.

The David Morris Potter prize will be awarded for the best essay on a topic in American history or culture. The prize carries a stipend of $150.

The Walter McClintock Prize is awarded to the student who writes the best essay on a topic in Native American history or culture. The prize, endowed by Walter McClintock, class of 1891, carries a stipend of $150.

Any work completed this academic year is eligible for consideration. Students must submit a copy of their essays by Friday, April 23 to George Miles, curator of the Yale Collection of Western Americana, Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library. Wall and High streets. All submissions should include the author's name, residential college affiliation, campus address, telephone number and email address.

Swing dance

The Schell Center will celebrate its 10th anniversary by holding a swing dance Saturday, April 24, 9 p.m.-1 a.m. at the Omni New Haven Hotel at Yale, 155 Temple St. The dress is creative semi-formal. Live music will be performed by the Tuxedo Swing Band, and swing lessons start at 8:15 p.m. Tickets, which are $8 and include a drink, may be purchased at the Law School dining hall through April 19. Fundraising walk and road race

On Sunday, April 25, the third annual Yale New Haven Community Road Race will take place beginning at 10 a.m. on Cross Campus. Proceeds from the race benefit the New Haven Scholarship Fund, which helps supply academically gifted students from New Haven public schools with college scholarships. Applications for the race are available at the Downtown Health & Racquet Club, Trailblazer, the master's office of each residential college, and Payne Whitney Gym.

Also on April 25, the March of Dimes will hold its annual Walk America event. Walkers will meet at Yale's parking lot #18, corner of Whitney and Humphrey streets. Times and application information are to be announced.


The Yale-China Essay Prize

The Yale-China Association welcomes submissions from Yale undergraduates for the 1999 Yale-China Essay Prize.

The Yale-China Essay Prize is given for the most outstanding piece of original scholarship addressing any aspect of the study of China and carries a monetary award. The competition was established in the spirit of promoting mutual understanding between the people of China and the U.S.

Submissions should be made in duplicate no later than Monday, April 26 to the Yale-China Association at 442 Temple Street, 2nd floor. They must include the author's name, college, year, major, address, and phone number.

Journal display

The School of Nursing, 100 Church St. South, is hosting a display of Sketchbook Visual Journals created by students from the Divinity School. The books were undertaken as part of a special class taught at the Divinity School titled "Visual Journal: Imaging the Interior." Contributors used a variety of media, including watercolor, inks, collage and monotype, to "nourish an inner creative renewal." The resulting imagery inspired journal passages and at times supported a process of inner healing through engagement with both image and text. The exhibit will run through April.
