Professor elected to National Academy of Engineering An expert on turbulence has been stirring up waves of pride amongst his colleagues in Yale Engineering. Katepalli R. Sreenivasan, the Harold W. Cheel Professor of Mechanical Engineering, recently became the first Yale faculty member to be elected to the National Academy of Engineering. He was also elected this year to the Third World Academy of Sciences in Trieste, Italy, and to the Connecticut Academy of Arts and Science. Sreenivasan has a broad range of research interests, and is known for his work in fluid dynamics, especially turbulence and other nonlinear phenomena. Born and educated in India, Sreenivasan came to Yale, via Johns Hopkins University, in 1979 as assistant professor of engineering and applied science. He was promoted to professor of mechanical engineering in 1985 and was named to the Cheel chair in 1988. He chaired the department of mechanical engineering 1987-92 and was acting chair of the then-Council of Engineering in 1989.
His many honors include election to the American Physical Society, the American Society of Mechanical Engineering, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
