Authors' readings help support fight against illiteracy An event to raise funds to help combat illiteracy in New Haven will feature noted authors reading from their own works. This opportunity to "Meet the Authors" will take place at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 20, in the Peabody Museum of Natural Historyc, 170 Whitney Ave. It is sponsored by Literacy Volunteers of Greater New Haven. The featured authors and the books they will read from are: * Charles Van Over, "The Best Bread Ever." Morley Safer of "60 Minutes" said of the book, "Everyone eats bread -- but anyone who really cares about what they eat will want this book." * Barbara Leaming, "Marilyn Monroe." Molly Haskell of the New York Times praised the author for her "sure dramatic instinct for illuminating overlooked material and re-examining the most interesting episodes." * Thomas Fleming, "Liberty!: The American Revolution." The book, which examines the human drama behind the war, was a companion volume to the PBS series of the same name.
The readings will be followed by a question-and-answer period, a book signing and refreshments. Tickets are $50. The proceeds will benefit literacy programs throughout the New Haven community. For further information, call 865-3867.
