There will be music and fun galore at campus celebrations

The campus will resemble a festive carnival-ground this weekend, when a variety of events will be held for the express purpose of having fun.

Three-legged races, dancing, dunk booths, pie-throwing and an inflatable slide will be just some of the sights and activities on Cross Campus when Yale hosts Communiversity Day on Saturday, April 24. The event, which started in the 1980s as a simple carnival, has grown to become an annual festival hosted by students to celebrate the relationship between the University and its community.

In conjunction with Communiversity Day, Yale students have also helped organize the Jumpstart KidsFest, a learning and fun fair for young children. It will take place on Saturday on the upper New Haven Green.

Campus festivities will continue on Sunday, April 25, when the University holds Spring Fling 1999, a festival for undergraduates marking the end of classes for the academic year. Featuring food and entertainment, Spring Fling gives students the chance to gather together for a good time before finally knuckling down to study for final exams.

Communiversity Day

More than 3,000 children and adults are expected to attend this year's Communiversity Day, which will be held 11 a.m.-2 p.m. on Cross Campus, the area bounded by College, High, Wall and Elm streets. The event is free and open to the public.

The theme for this year's celebration of Yale's relationship with New Haven is "Together We Can!"

"The idea behind our theme is that if everyone works together, almost anything can be achieved," says Debby Wang '00, one of the coordinators of Communiversity Day. "We're emphasizing unity and friendship, which is what this event is all about."

The festival will include entertainment by campus and local bands, dance performances, a moonbounce and a Kids Carnival, where Yale students will take part in numerous activities with younger community members. These include a dunk booth, a pie-throwing session, and lessons in merengue dancing.

Youngsters can also watch members of Yale intramural teams as they compete in such athletic feats as three-legged races. Free hot dogs and hamburgers, drinks, cotton candy and popcorn will be available throughout the event.

Also highlighting Communiversity Day will be the Yale Charities Auction, during which a wide range of donated items will be auctioned off to raise money for local charities.

Communiversity Day involves many groups and organizations representing the cultural diversity of New Haven. It is organized by Alpha Phi Omega and jointly sponsored by Dwight Hall, the Yale Athletic Department, the Yale Office of New Haven and State Affairs, Jumpstart and the Greater New Haven Arts Council.

Jumpstart KidsFest

More than 25 learning stations will be set up on the Upper Green during the Jumpstart KidsFest, a Dwight Hall-sponsored event that will take place 11 a.m.-3 p.m. At these stations, young children can enjoy a wide range of hands-on, creative activities, such as making kites, windsocks and puppets. Face-painting, body tracing and parachute games are among the other activities. This festival is also free and open to the public.

"The children can learn about a lot of different things while they are having fun," says Eugene Kim '00, one of the organizers of the festival. For example, a representative from the Regional Water Authority will be on hand to explain to children how water becomes available at their homes, and a post office employee will man a letter-writing station for the youngsters.

In addition to community volunteers, learning stations at the festival will be operated by Yale student members of Jumpstart, an organization that pairs college students with at-risk preschoolers for one-on-one classroom instruction with an emphasis on preliteracy.

This year's Communiversity Day and Jumpstart KidsFest celebrations are taking place on the same day as the Mayor's Youth and Family Expo '99, which is being held at the New Haven Coliseum. Buses will be available between the Coliseum, the New Haven Green and the campus for those wishing to attend the three events.

Spring Fling

The band Rusted Root will be the main musical act of Spring Fling, which will take place on Cross Campus beginning Sunday afternoon. The award-winning East Coast band Entrain will be the opening act. Throughout the festival, the Yale-affiliated radio station WYBC will be giving away Entrain CDs and other promotional items.

Spring Fling, which is organized by the Yale College Council, will also feature a barbecue.
