Kosovo crisis to be discussion topic

The long-term effects of NATO intervention in Kosovo will be examined in a panel discussion at 4 p.m. on Thursday, April 22.

Titled "Perspectives on the Kosovo Crisis," the panel will be held in the auditorium of Luce Hall, 34 Hillhouse Ave. It is free and open to the public. The event is sponsored by the Yale Center for International and Area Studies' Councils on Russian and Eastern Europe and on West European Studies.

Discussions will range from the questions of the legality and legitimacy of the NATO intervention to why the United Nations has been silent to considerations of the implications of sending in ground troops, Russia's resistance to NATO's actions, and American interests and motivations in the conflict.

Panelists will include Ruth Wedgewood, professor of law, who is a specialist on international law; Bradford Westerfield, the Damon Wells Jr. Professor of Political Science and International Studies, who is a leading scholar on defense and foreign policy; Derek Boothby, a fellow in the United Nations Studies program and retired director of the department of political affairs at the United Nations; Charles Hill, diplomat-in-residence and lecturer, Council on International Affairs, who was chief adviser to former U.N. General Secretary Boutros Boutros-Ghali; and Allan Stam, assistant professor in political science, a specialist in international security and war. The panel will be moderated by Pauline Jones-Luong, assistant professor of political science and scholar of Russia and Central Asia.
