Memorial service held for former trustee David C. Grimes

Members of the Yale community gathered in Marquand Chapel on April 24 for a memorial service in honor of David C. Grimes '45W.

Mr. Grimes, a retired businessman and former Yale trustee, died Jan. 6 of lung cancer at his home in the Brentwood area of Los Angeles, Calif. He was 73 years old.

A native of Omaha, Nebraska, Mr. Grimes entered Yale in 1942 with the Class of 1945W. At the end of his freshman year, he resigned to enlist in the U.S. Navy, where he served as an ensign and pilot until 1946. He then returned to Yale, receiving his bachelor's degree in 1948. He was awarded a Mellon Fellowship to Clare College of Cambridge University, where he received his master's degree in modern history, specializing in British economic history.

Mr. Grimes began his business career in 1950 as a reporter with the Wall Street Journal in New York City and Dallas, Texas. The following year, he joined the Republic National Bank of Dallas as a clerk in the petroleum department. He was elected as a vice president of the company in 1958. He left six years later to become president and chief executive officer of Brentwood Financial Corporation, a Los Angeles savings and loan holding company. He was also chair and president of its principal subsidiary, Brentwood Savings and Loan Association.

His long record of service to the University includes terms as president of the Yale Club of Dallas, and as a director of that club and the Yale Club of Southern California. He was a member of the executive committee of the Yale Alumni Board for several years, eventually serving as vice chair and chair. He was a member of the Commission on Alumni Affairs (the Dwyer Commission) and was elected in 1972 as chair of the Founding Board of the Association of Yale Alumni. In 1973, he was awarded the Yale Medal for "outstanding service" to the University, and in 1974, he was elected an alumni fellow of the Yale Corporation.

Mr. Grimes' professional affiliations included serving on the advisory committee to the Commissioner of Savings and Loan for the State of California. He was also active in many community causes.

A longtime friend of President George Bush, Mr. Grimes represented Bush on several State Department trips to Bulgaria.

Mr. Grimes is survived by his wife, Suzanne; two sons, David of San Marino, Calif., and George of St. Louis, Missouri; a daughter, Susan Grimes of Los Angeles; two brothers, Lee of New Haven, Conn., and George of Walnut Creek, Calif.; and six grandchildren.
