Gift from Class of 1951 will help to
strengthen libraries in four city schools

The Yale College Class of 1951 has donated $10,000 to the New Haven Public Schools to buy books and other materials for four school libraries/media centers.

The gift by the alumni group was made at the request of author and humorist Calvin Trillin '57 B.A., who spoke at the annual class dinner this year. Rather than accept an honorarium, Trillin asked that a contribution be made to the New Haven Public Schools.

This is not the first time that a New Haven organization has benefited as a result of Trillin's popularity as a speaker. In 1990 the former Yale trustee presented a one-man show at Yale titled "Words No Music" that raised more than $20,000 for the New Haven Free Public Library.

The $10,000 gift to the city's schools was made thanks to the leadership of Daniel Rose, a member of the Class of 1951 and a well-known leader in real estate and civic service in New York City. In fact, Rose is the founder of the Harlem Education Activities Fund, a partnership program that supports academic programs for students in Harlem public schools.

In recognition of the partnerships that Yale and the New Haven Public Schools have established together, the $10,000 gift will be distributed equally among four schools with strong University-community partnerships. They are:

* Timothy Dwight Elementary School, where Yale supports the school's literary initiatives through the America Reads Challenge Program;

' * East Rock Global Studies K-8 Magnet School, which works with the Yale Center for International and Area Studies;

* Hill Regional Career High School, an academic partner with the Schools of Medicine and Nursing; and

* Cooperative Arts and Humanities Regional Magnet High School, which has a strong collaboration with the School of Music.

"This gift further affirms the spirit and reality of partnership between the New Haven Public Schools and Yale University," said Reginald Mayo, superintendent of schools. "The generosity of the Yale alumni in the Class of 1951 and the leadership of Calvin Trillin and Daniel Rose will do much to help our schools provide students with the tools they need to read independently and well. Literacy is a key priority for the New Haven Public Schools, and this gift will help us achieve our goals."

Bernadette Strode, principal of Timothy Dwight Elementary School, said, "The library/media center at Dwight is a vital center for all of our students. This wonderful gift will help us as we develop and maintain a first-class collection for our students and provide expanded resources for our teachers and the tutors who work with our children every day."
