1999 Commencement Information

Yale University will hold its 298th Commencement ceremony Monday, May 24, at 10:30 a.m. on the Old Campus.

No tickets are required, and the ceremony will take place outdoors even if it rains.

The following is presented for the general information of the Yale community. For more details, visit the Commencement web site at www.yale.edu/secretary/commencement, or listen to the recorded message of events at 432-2310.


Baccalaureate Address

Baccalaureate services are scheduled for 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, May 23, in Woolsey Hall, corner of College and Grove streets. President Richard C. Levin will speak at both services, and the programs will be identical.

Seniors and their guests from the following residential colleges should attend the 10 a.m. service: Berkeley, Calhoun, Davenport, Jonathan Edwards, Silliman and Ezra Stiles. Seniors and their guests from the following colleges should attend the 11:30 a.m. service: Branford, Timothy Dwight, Morse, Pierson, Saybrook and Trumbull. Graduate students and their guests, as well as other members of the Yale community, may attend either service. No tickets are required.


Commencement Day

On Commencement morning, undergraduates assemble in their college courtyards and, under the direction of faculty marshals, march to Cross Campus to form a line of procession. Graduate School degree candidates will assemble on Cross Campus. Degree candidates from the professional schools will assemble at Beinecke Plaza (Hewitt Quadrangle). From there they will march to Cross Campus and, joining the Graduate School degree candidates, process to Old Campus.

Parents and guests should be seated on Old Campus no later than 10:15 a.m. There is no reserved seating, and tickets are not required. The ceremony will be held rain or shine, beginning at 10:30 a.m.

During Commencement, symbolic diplomas are presented to student marshals representing degree candidates from Yale College and the graduate and professional schools. After the Old Campus ceremony, undergraduates follow faculty marshals back to their residential colleges, where individual diplomas are awarded. Buffet luncheons in the residential college dining halls follow the diploma ceremonies. Berkeley College will hold its diploma ceremonies on the Cross Campus lawn in front of Sterling Memorial Library, 120 High St. In case of rain, ceremonies will be held in University Commons.

In addition to Berkeley College, the following colleges have designated alternative locations for their degree ceremonies in case of rain: Branford College -- Center Church on the Green; Calhoun College -- First & Summerfield United Methodist Church, 425 College St.; Morse College -- Trinity Church on the Green; Saybrook College -- United Church on the Green; Ezra Stiles College -- Christ Episcopal Church, 84 Broadway; Trumbull College -- Battell Chapel, corner of Elm and College streets.

Davenport, Timothy Dwight, Jonathan Edwards, Pierson and Silliman colleges will hold ceremonies on their grounds, rain or shine.

Information about post-Commencement ceremonies for graduate and professional students is listed below.


Members of the Faculty

There are two faculty sections at ground level in front of the Commencement platform; no seats in this section are reserved. All who plan to sit there are requested to be in academic dress.


Graduate and Professional Schools' Degree Ceremonies

Schools of Art and Architecture The two schools will hold a joint degree ceremony in Weir courtyard (the sculpture garden of the Yale University Art Gallery), 66 High St. Following the ceremony, the School of Architecture will hold a luncheon for students and their guests in Weir courtyard, and the School of Art will host a reception at Scoozi's restaurant, 1104 Chapel St. The reception will be free of charge, but by invitation only. In case of rain, the joint degree ceremony will be held in the Yale University Art Gallery lecture hall (entrance on High Street), and the School of Architecture luncheon will take place in the gallery's sculpture hall.

Divinity School On May 23 at 4 p.m., there will be a Baccalaureate Service on the Sterling Quadrangle, 409 Prospect St. Peter Hawkins, chair of the religion and the arts program, will speak; a reception will follow. On May 24, there will be a degree ceremony on the Sterling Quadrangle at 12:30 p.m. Dean Richard Wood will deliver a Charge to the Graduates. A buffet luncheon will follow. In the event of rain, M.A.R. and S.T.M. degrees will be awarded at 12:30 p.m. in Marquand Chapel; M.Div. degrees will be awarded at 1:30 p.m. Tickets are not required. School of Drama A degree ceremony and the awarding of prizes will take place at University Theatre, 222 York St. A reception will follow in Vernon Hall, 217 York St. No tickets are necessary.

Department of Epidemiology and Public Health A degree ceremony will take place at 2 p.m. on the lawn of the Laboratory of Epidemiology and Public Health (LEPH), 60 College St. Speaking will be Dr. Margaret Hamburg, assistant secretary for planning and evaluation at the Department of Health and Human Services. The event is open to all, and no tickets are necessary. A noon luncheon on the LEPH lawn will precede the degree ceremony. Tickets are required and can be obtained by calling 785-6260. Advance tickets are $10 per person; a limited number of tickets will be available graduation day for $12 per person. In case of rain, all events will be moved indoors at 60 College St.

School of Forestry and Environmental Studies A degree ceremony and presentation of faculty awards, and a reception will be held on the lawn of Marsh Hall, 360 Prospect St.

Graduate School of Arts and Sciences On May 23, there will be a convocation at 2:30 p.m. in the Hall of Graduate Studies (HGS) courtyard, 320 York St. (academic dress may be worn), with guest speaker Thomas Lovejoy of the Smithsonian Institution and World Bank. The event also will include the awarding of prizes to graduate students and of Wilbur Cross Medals to distinguished alumni. A reception will follow. On May 24, the presentation of master's and Ph.D. degrees will take place in Woolsey Hall. (M.A. recipients in international and area studies, and international and development economics should attend the degree ceremony in Luce Hall, 34 Hillhouse Ave.) A reception will follow in the HGS courtyard, and a luncheon will take place in the HGS dining hall. Tickets for the luncheon may be purchased from tables in the HGS courtyard the afternoon of May 23 and starting at 1 p.m. on May 24.

Law School A reception for graduating students and their guests, hosted by Dean Anthony Kronman and Nancy Greenberg, will be held May 23, 5-7 p.m., in the Law School dining hall, 127 Wall St. On May 24, the degree ceremony, followed by a champagne reception, will take place in the Law School courtyard. A buffet dinner, at $15 per person, also will be available in the Law School dining hall (students may use their unused dining hall charges to pay for their guests). In case of rain, the Law School ceremony will take place in Payne Whitney Gymnasium's Lanman Center.

School of Management A degree ceremony will be held in Culkins Courtyard, 135 Prospect St., followed by a luncheon in Donaldson Commons, 15 Mansfield St. Students will receive one complimentary luncheon ticket. Additional tickets may be purchased for $10 in advance, $15 the day of Commencement. Call 432-6012 for information. In case of rain, all events will be held in Ingalls Rink, 73 Sachem St. For information about shuttle service from Old Campus, call 432-6006.

School of Medicine A degree ceremony will be held on the courtyard of Edward S. Harkness Hall, 367 Cedar St. A reception will follow on the courtyard and in Marigolds Dining Room. For ticket information, call 737-1280. In the event of heavy rain, the degree ceremony will take place in Harkness Auditorium, 333 Cedar St. Former American Red Cross Director Elizabeth Dole will give the commencement address.

School of Music A free Commencement concert will take place May 23 at 4 p.m. in Morse Recital Hall in Sprague Memorial Hall, 470 College St. On May 24, a degree ceremony will be held in Morse Recital Hall. A reception will follow at the Center Church Parish House, 311 Temple St. Tickets are not required.

School of Nursing A degree ceremony will be held at Prince Street Park, corner of Cedar and Prince streets, under a tent, rain or shine. A buffet will immediately follow. There is no charge for the ceremony. The buffet is $15 per person; for reservations, call 737-5678.

Yale Center for International and Area Studies A degree ceremony for students who are Master of Arts degree candidates in African studies, East Asian studies, international relations, Russian and East European studies, and international development economics will be held on the front lawn of Luce Hall, 34 Hillhouse Ave. Immediately following, there will be a reception in the Luce Hall common room. In case of rain, the degree ceremony will be held in the Luce Hall auditorium, where seating will be limited and guests will be admitted by ticket.

Saturday, May 22

4­6 p.m. President Richard C. Levin's reception for members of the Yale College senior class and their guests, 43 Hillhouse Ave. Rain location: University Commons, Woolsey Hall, corner of Grove and College streets.

8 p.m. Concert by the Yale Glee Club in Woolsey Hall. To order tickets or for other information, call 432-4136.

8 p.m. The Yale Dramatic Association will present the Commencement Musical "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum." University Theatre. (Previous performances are at 8 p.m. on Friday, May 21, and 2 p.m. on Saturday.) Tickets are $18 and $16 for adults; $12 and $10 for students. To order, call 432-1212.


Sunday, May 23

10 a.m. Baccalaureate services in Woolsey Hall for students from Berkeley, Calhoun, Davenport, Jonathan Edwards, Silliman and Ezra Stiles residential colleges. Students will be in academic costume and will assemble in their college courtyards at 9:20 a.m.

11:30 a.m. Baccalaureate services in Woolsey Hall for students from Branford, Timothy Dwight, Morse, Pierson, Saybrook and Trumbull residential colleges. Students will be in academic costume and will assemble in their college courtyards at 10:50 a.m.

2:30 p.m. Class Day ceremonies on Old Campus. David Gergen '63, editor-at-large at U.S. News and World Report and a Yale trustee, will be the featured speaker. Tickets are not required. Seniors assemble on Cross Campus at 1:45 p.m. for the march to Old Campus, wearing academic gowns but headgear of choice. In the event of severe weather, Class Day will be held in Woolsey Hall; for recorded information, call 432-2310.

4 p.m. School of Music's Commencement Concert in Morse Recital Hall in Sprague Memorial Hall, 470 College St. Admission is free. For information, call 432-4158.

4:30 p.m. Masters' receptions in the residential colleges.

4:30 p.m. Service of Remembrance at Battell Chapel, corner of Elm and College streets, sponsored by the University Chaplain's office -- a time for remembering family members and friends who have died. For information, contact Reverend Cynthia Terry at 432-1131.

7 p.m. The Yale Concert Band will present a "Twilight Concert" on Old Campus, rain or shine. Admission is free.

8 p.m. The Whiffenpoofs and Whim 'n' Rhythm will present a concert in Woolsey Hall. Tickets: $18 adults; $12 students. Reservations: 436-8000, ext. 63798.

Monday, May 24

9:30 a.m. Yale College seniors assemble in college courtyards in academic regalia.

9:40 a.m. Candidates for graduate and professional degrees assemble on Cross Campus in academic regalia near signs indicating school or degree.

10:30 a.m. Commencement ceremony, Old Campus.

Noon Presentation of diplomas at residential colleges and professional schools, followed by luncheons or receptions. Ph.D. diplomas presented in Woolsey Hall.


Food Service

Sunday, May 23

Complimentary Continental Breakfast will be served on the lawn of Old Campus, 7-10 a.m.

Brunch Buffet will be served in Berkeley, Calhoun, Davenport, Jonathan Edwards, Silliman and Ezra Stiles residential colleges, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

Brunch Buffet will be served in Branford, Timothy Dwight, Morse, Pierson, Saybrook and Trumbull residential colleges, 12:30-1:45 p.m.

Dinner Buffet will be served in Commons 5-8 p.m.; reservations required.


Monday, May 24

Complimentary Continental Breakfast will be served on the lawn of Old campus 7-10 a.m.

Commencement Buffet will be served in Commons and every residential college from 1:30 p.m. until finished.

All graduating seniors are entitled to complimentary meals. Guest tickets for Sunday's brunch buffets are $12 each; $6 for children ages 4-8 and free for children age 3 and under. Tickets for Sunday's dinner will not be sold at the door and must be purchased in advance of Commencement Weekend; tickets are $17 for adults, $9 for children ages 4-8 and free for children age 3 and under. Tickets for the Commencement Buffet are $15 each; $8 for children ages 4-8 and free for children age 3 and under. With the exception of Sunday's dinner, tickets may be purchased at the door and paid for in cash or by check for the exact amount.
