Students and alumni looking for Yale-name fashions a touch more elegant than the ever-popular baseball caps and T-shirts can now purchase scarves and ties with University-themed designs.
The limited edition series of silk scarves and ties, which depict Yale's heraldic shields, were commissioned by the Office of the Secretary in collaboration with masters and associate masters of some of the residential colleges. The designs combine aspects of Yale's residential college architecture with elements from each college's coat of arms.
The scarves and ties have been manufactured for Yale in Italy by the same companies that supply the world's leading fashion designers, including Ferragamo and Ralph Lauren.
The hand-rolled scarves are 90 x 90 centimeters and cost from $49.99 (for a scarf representing a specific residential college) to $68.90 (for a scarf depicting all of the residential colleges). Ties, which display the college arms in a traditional design, cost $36.
Currently, scarves and ties are available for Branford, Calhoun, Jonathan Edwards, Ezra Stiles, Morse, Pierson, Silliman and Timothy Dwight colleges. Plans are underway to extend the series to the other residential colleges, as well as to the professional schools and Yale museums.
The new items can be purchased through the Office of the Secretary, Monday-Thursday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Scarves and ties are also available through the associate masters of the various residential colleges depicted on the clothing. Early ordering is encouraged because of the limited supply.
