Guide again taps Yale as a 'must-see' attraction For the second year in a row, a popular travel guide is advising visitors to stop by the historic Yale campus when journeying through the region. Yale was designated as an "Editors' Pick" in the 1999 Yankee Magazine Travel Guide to New England, the most widely distributed and best-selling guide to the six-state region. For 30 years now, the Yankee Magazine Travel Guide to New England has provided its readers with a comprehensive vacation planning tool and daily reference. Each year, the travel editors, along with a corps of "insiders" in each state, select the very best from each state's attractions, food, lodgings and shopping to designate as "Editors' Picks," places that are "sure not to disappoint." Free, student-led tours of the campus are offered daily at the Yale Visitors Information Center, 149 Elm St. Each tour begins at the center with a brief history of Yale and New Haven. Visitors then walk to the historic Old Campus and see aspects of student life at several of Yale's 12 residential colleges, including the Branford College courtyard, the Davenport College common room and the Pierson College tower. Visitors can also compare the Gothic splendor of Sterling Memorial Library with the more modern design of the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, which is constructed with over 100 slabs of translucent marble.
The tours are offered at 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Monday-Friday, and at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Special group tours can be arranged for a nominal fee by calling the Visitors Information Center at 432-2300 at least two weeks in advance.
