Family Festival to celebrate Yale Art Gallery exhibitions
The Yale University Art Gallery will become an interactive celebration of the arts when it sets the stage for its Family Festival on Saturday, June 10.
Chinese dancers, Renaissance musicians and Shakespearean actors will be among the performers at the festival, which is offered in conjunction with the gallery's four current exhibitions: "Modern Gothic: The Revival of Medieval Art," "Philip Guston: A New Alphabet," "Imaging African Art: Documentation and Transformation" and "Fabulous Beasts in Asian Art." Hands-on activities will include African mask-making, puppet-making and painting.
Led by its artistic director, Jim Andreassi, The Elm Shakespeare Company will perform the opening scene of Shakespeare's "King Lear," and the Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company will present the "Lion Dance." Part of the gallery will be transformed into a medieval village as singers, dancers and musicians provide revelry and entertainment, all in period costumes and playing period instruments.
The festival, which will be held 1-4 p.m., is free and open to the public. Cotton candy and other light carnival fare will be available for a nominal charge.
