Students will teach in China, Hong Kong

The Yale-China Association has selected five members of Yale College's Class of 2000 as Yale-China Teaching Fellows for a term of two years beginning this fall.

Since 1909, Yale-China's competitive fellowship program has sent hundreds of Yale College graduates to teach at schools and universities in Hong Kong and mainland China. This year's fellows are Tanya Loh of Davenport College, Allison Stenberg of Berkeley College, Denise Ho of Branford College, Amanda Kaplan of Ezra Stiles College and Jeremy Rappleye of Ezra Stiles College.

Loh, an English major from Somis, California, will teach a series of academic writing courses for English majors, as well as lecture on American history and culture, at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. She has served as a freshman counselor, a Yale Alumni Community Service Fellow and a City of New Haven Presidential Public Service Fellow. She looks forward to living near her family in Hong Kong and hopes to pursue cultural activities such as Shaolin kungfu and lion dancing.

Stenberg, a history major from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, will join Loh at the Chinese University, where she hopes to share her love of literature with her students. A world traveler, Stenberg spent two years in Beijing with her family in 1987-89. Her summer teaching experience includes tutoring French in Chapel Hill and serving as a teacher's aide at a Bible camp in South Africa.

Ho, a history major from Laguna Hills, California, will teach oral English at the Yali Middle School in Changsha, Hunan. Ho previously spent a summer studying Chinese in Beijing on a Light Fellowship and wrote her senior essay on early 20th-century mission colleges in China. Her language teaching experience includes volunteer work in a bilingual classroom in New Haven.

Kaplan, a Spanish and political science major from Laguna Beach, California, will teach primary and middle school students at Huizhen Academy in Ningbo, Zhejiang. She has taught English to Spanish speakers in New Haven and in Uruguay, and has lived and worked in Argentina and Spain. Kaplan hopes to find a way to engage her students through her love of dancing.

Rappleye, a history and teacher preparation double major from Sacramento, California, will teach English to business, economics and finance majors at Lingnan College of Zhongshan University in Guangzhou. Rappleye decided upon teaching as a career after two summers of teaching in Ecuador and the Dominican Republic. He has just completed a semester of student teaching at Branford High School.
