Center's family celebration will mark Cancer Survivors Day
The Yale Cancer Center (YCC) will mark National Cancer Survivors Day this year with a family-oriented celebration on Sunday, June 4.
The event will feature workshops and a picnic supper at the School of Medicine's Harkness Courtyard, 367 Cedar Street. Cancer survivors of all ages and their families are invited to take part in the program, which runs 2-6 p.m.
The special afternoon of workshops will include "Enhancing Lifestyle through Exercise and Nutrition," "Life After Cancer Treatment," "Reflexology and Massage," "Reiki" and "Creative Healing through Art, Music and Journal Keeping." Programs for children and adolescents, sponsored by Fleet Bank, include "Summer Gardening for Nutrition," "Strength Training and Fitness" and "Summer Makeovers."
The picnic supper is sponsored by Yale-New Haven Hospital. The School of Medicine is also a sponsor of the event.
WTNH (Channel 8) meteorologist "Dr." Mel Goldstein, a multiple myeloma patient at YCC, will serve as master of ceremonies of the event for the third year.
There are more than eight million cancer survivors in the United States today, and prospects for survival are increasing steadily. After rising from 1973 to 1991, mortality rates for all cancer sites combined decreased for the first time in the early 1990s. According to figures released this month by the National Cancer Institute, that decline in overall cancer mortality accelerated between 1995 and 1997, despite a growing and aging population. An estimated 1.2 million new cases of cancer are expected to be diagnosed this year. Approximately 60 % of those cases will survive for at least five years.
The Cancer Survivors Day program is free, but reservations are necessary. Call (203) 688-2000 to register.
