Sneak previews now part of the
cinematic fare at Yale Film Society

The recent screening of "Fight Club" is just the latest sneak preview and Yale alumnus Edward Norton is just one figure from the entertainment industry that the Yale Film Society has brought to campus in recent years (see related story).

For most of its history, the undergraduate organization merely screened classic and recently released movies for campus audiences.

Beginning five years ago, however, the Yale Film Society expanded both its membership and its core mission with the goal of enhancing the University's film culture by bringing cutting-edge works and notable individuals from the entertainment industry to Yale.

Today, the film society boasts over 800 members and offers an active program of screenings and talks on such topics as the business of entertainment and the difference between artistic films and popular hits. It is currently led by Pedro Kos, a senior in Saybrook College, and a board of about 20 working officers.

In addition to Norton, the Yale Film Society has played host to directors Kenneth Branaugh, Oliver Stone and Neil Labute; producers Chris Lee, Christine Vachon, Debra Hill and Bruce Cohen; and Jack Lechner, vice president of Miramax.

The group has also presented sneak previews of such films as "Apt Pupil," "Go!," "American Beauty" and "Crazy in Alabama," in addition to "Fight Club."

For its next sneak preview, the Yale Film Society will present "Being John Malkovich." The film stars John Cusack as a puppeteer who discovers a portal into the brain of John Malkovich (playing himself). By entering this portal, the puppeteer can control Malkovich, and he soon shares this novelty with others, including his wife (played by Cameron Diaz). This marital generosity has an unexpected side effect when the wife falls for the woman with whom Malkovich is in love.

"Being John Malkovich" will be screened at 8 and 10 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 21, at the Whitney Humanities Center, 53 Wall St. The event is open only to members of the Yale Film Society, who can pick up passes for the event between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. the day of the screening in University Commons. Memberships can be purchased for $10 at any Yale Film Society screening.

See the Calendar section of this paper for information about other Yale Film Society events.
