'Yale Nursing Matters' magazine debuts at YSN

The Yale School of Nursing (YSN) has created a new publication, Yale Nursing Matters, to highlight the school's growing role in research, clinical practice and community outreach.

The magazine's debut issue was circulated Oct. 8 to graduates, the larger nursing community and potential supporters.

YSN Dean Catherine L. Gilliss says the purpose of the publication is to "tell the story of this school, its continued and expanding leadership role in clinical research and its commitment to outreach. We are also informing our friends about YSN's contribution to nursing -- and more broadly to health care -- through our mission of scholarship, education and clinical practice."

The first issue of the magazine includes a story on a major initiative funded by the National Institutes of Health to improve medication compliance in patients with HIV/AIDS. Other stories look at a groundbreaking investigation into the health effects of Agent Orange on women veterans, and a new intervention that dramatically improved the health of adolescents with diabetes through coping skills training.

"The research enterprise at YSN has grown exponentially in recent years with the inception of our doctoral program and the arrival of such leading scholars as Margaret Grey and Ruth McCorkle," says Gilliss. "Nursing research is exciting for the same reason that nursing itself is exciting: It matters. It finds a way to make real differences in the health and lives of individuals and communities."

Yale Nursing Matters initially will be published twice a year. Anyone interested in subscribing should call the editor at (203) 737-1376 or write: Colleen Shaddox, Director of External Affairs, Yale University School of Nursing, 100 Church St. South, P.O. Box 9740, New Haven, CT 06536-0740.
