Award-winning journalist Roger Simon
to visit as Poynter Fellow

Roger Simon, the chief political correspondent of U.S. News & World Report, syndicated columnist and best-selling author, will visit the campus on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 18 and 19, as the first Poynter Fellow in Journalism at Yale for 1999-2000.

The award-winning journalist will deliver the Poynter Lecture, "Performing for the Presidency: How Candidates Run for Office in the New Media Age," at 4 p.m. on Monday in Rm. 120 of the Law School, 127 Wall St. The following day at 4 p.m., he will be the guest at a tea in the Calhoun College master's house, 434 College St. Both events are free and open to the public.

For his reporting, Simon has won more than three dozen first-place awards -- including major honors from the Associated Press and United Press International -- and is the only two-time winner of the American Society of Newspaper Editors Distinguished Writing Award for Commentary. He has twice won the National Headliner Award, and his work has been included in "Best Newspaper Writing" in 1984, 1986 and 1993. He is the first non-black journalist to win a national writing award from the National Association of Black Journalists.

Simon's books include a collection of his works titled "Simon Says: the Best of Roger Simon," "Road Show," an examination of presidential politics and the best-selling "Show Time," about the Clinton administration. His new book, to be published in early 2000, will expand upon the themes of his Poynter Fellowship lecture.

The Associated Press has called Simon's work "sensitive, relevant and written with understated elegance." When the journalist won second place in the Ernie Pyle Memorial Award competition, judges cited his "extraordinary ability to capture the story in terms of ordinary people."

Simon's work has been syndicated since 1981 and is distributed to newspapers throughout the world. It also appears twice weekly on America Online.

A regular commentator on the ABC News affiliate in Baltimore, Simon has appeared on numerous television and radio programs and networks, including the "Today Show," "Good Morning America," "Larry King Live," C-SPAN, CNN, MSNBC, CNBC, CBS News Nighwatch and the BBC. He also contributes articles to national magazines ranging from The New Republic to The New York Times Book Review.

Simon first gained renown as an investigative reporter and columnist during his 12 years at the Chicago Sun Times. He was a staff columnist at The Baltimore Sun from 1984 to 1995. In 1998 he became the White House correspondent of the Chicago Tribune and covered the Monica Lewinsky scandal. He joined U.S. News & World Report in 1999. In April of the same year, he was inducted into the Chicago Journalism Hall of Fame, whose members include Carl Sandburg, Ben Hecht, Ring Lardner and Mike Royko.

The Poynter Fellowship in Journalism at Yale was established by Nelson Poynter '27 M.A. It brings to campus journalists who have made significant contributions to their field. In recent years, the fellowship has brought Jeff Greenfield, Bob Woodward, Tim Russert, Frank Rich and Doris Kearns Goodwin to the campus.
