Event to examine disparities
in the nation's health care

A symposium on "Current Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Health" will be held Friday and Saturday, Feb. 9 and 10, at the Law School, 127 Wall St.

The symposium, which is open to the public, is hosted by the Yale Journal of Health Policy, Law and Ethics and sponsored by the Institution for Social & Policy Studies at Yale.

"Racial disparities in the prevention, incidence, and treatment of disease are widely recognized yet poorly understood," says Leslie Meltzer, co-editor-in-chief of the journal and a Law School student. "This conference offers a unique opportunity for health-care professionals, policymakers and community members to come together to discuss compelling evidence that race and ethnicity correlate with persistent, and often increasing, health disparities among U.S. populations."

Dr. Jason Silvers, the journal's other editor-in-chief and a Law School student, adds: "This symposium aims to delineate the scope and breadth of the problem, isolate some of the etiologic factors involved, improve societal awareness, and most importantly, move us toward a timely resolution."

The symposium begins Friday afternoon with welcoming remarks by Anthony T. Kronman, dean of the Law School. Participants will address such topics as "Race and Discretion in American Medicine," "Disparities in Health Care: A Search for Causes and Explanations for the Medicare Experience," "Should the Patients' Bill of Rights Include Affirmative Action?" "Tuskegee's Warning," "The Search for 'Race': Implications in the New Genomic Medicine," "Site of Medical Care: Do Racial and Ethnic Differences Persist in Where Care is Obtained?" and "Race and Health Trends and Social Determinants."

A full schedule of symposium events will be posted online at www.yale.edu/yjhple as it becomes available.

The Yale Journal of Health Policy, Law and Ethics is a biannual production of the Law School, the School of Medicine and its Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, and the School of Nursing. The journal offers a forum for interdisciplinary discussion on topics in health policy, health law and biomedical ethics. The journal will publish its first issue in March, containing papers by the symposium speakers.
