There are dinosaurs galore at the Peabody this month

Forget groundhogs. Forget Cupid. February is the month for dinosaurs -- at least at the Peabody Museum of Natural History.

The museum will open a month-long celebration of its renowned dinosaur collection with a reprise of its popular Dino-Snore program on Saturday, Feb. 17.

Dino-Snore gives members of the Peabody Associates and their families an opportunity to tip-toe around the museum's halls after everyone has gone home and sleep in the shadows of the museum's skeletal giants. The event includes entertainment, a light evening snack and a continental breakfast. Participants must bring their own sleeping bags, mats and flashlights. The cost is $30 per person, and there is a limit of three children per adult. A special membership rate will be given to anyone wishing to participate in Dino-Snore. Preregistration is required. To sign up, call (203) 432-3776 or send email to peabody.events@yale.edu.

The Peabody will follow the sleepover with Dinosaur Days, Monday-Saturday, Feb. 19-24. Each day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the museum will offer a variety of programs designed for families. Visitors to the museum can participate in a fossil dig, create dinosaur crafts, visit the fossil touch table, meet experts in the field of paleontology and watch a fossil preparator at work. There will be daily performances of "Roxi Foxx and the Dinosaurs" by Betty Baisden and the Giggle Puppets at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

Dinosaur Days is sponsored by United Technologies.

The Peabody will conclude its month-long celebration with "Dino-Mite!" noon-4 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 24. The award-winning event featuring Dudley the Dinosaur and members of the New Haven Dental Association is held annually in honor of National Children's Dental Health Month. Dentists from the city will explain how to brush Dino-teeth (and human teeth too). The first 100 children will receive a Dino-Mite treat bag.

Both Dinosaur Days and Dino-Mite are free with museum admission.

The Peabody Museum of Natural History is located at 170 Whitney Ave. It is open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Saturday and noon-5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for senior citizens over age 65 and children age 3-15. Visitor parking is located at the south end of Yale Lot 22 (enter on Whitney Avenue across from Humphrey Street). For directions and other information, call the InfoTape at (203) 432-5050 or visit the museum's website at www.peabody.yale.edu.
