Dance troupes to unite in benefit performance

For the fourth year in a row, campus dance troupes will join together in a performance benefiting a New Haven charity.

"Stand Up and Dance 2001" will be presented by the Alliance for Dance at Yale on Saturday, Feb. 17, at 8 p.m. in Woolsey Hall, corner of Grove and Prospect streets. The University of Massachusetts will perform along with Yale's six dance companies and other talent. Tickets are $5 for students, $10 for adults and $3 for children under age 12.

Proceeds from the performance will benefit AIDS Interfaith Network of New Haven. The event is sponsored in part by the Yale Office of New Haven and State Affairs.

"Stand Up and Dance" was founded in the spring of 1997 by Marc Jacobson and Neal Mitra, two Yale students who sought to tap into the University's performance talent in order to unite the school and the New Haven community.

Alliance for Dance at Yale College, founded in the spring of 1998 by Sidra Bell '01 of Saybrook College and Elana Aquino '00 of Silliman College, aims to increase appreciation for dance on campus and in the New Haven community. In October of 1999, the troupe hosted the second annual Dance Symposium at Yale, a day of workshops and performances that brought together students from Yale and local schools as well as New Haven residents.

According to Bell, the Alliance hopes to make these kinds of collaborative events a tradition at the University and to encourage the Yale community to recognize dance as an integral part of the University curriculum and students' educational and cultural experience.

For tickets or information, contact Sidra Bell, co-executive director, Alliance for Dance at Yale, at sidra.bell@yale.edu or at (203) 436-3801.
